Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism (www.journalism.columbia.edu) is currently seeking a tenure-track professor of Journalism (rank to be determined), who will also serve as Assistant Director of the Tow Center for Digital Journalism This is a rare opportunity to have an impact on the long term future of journalism as part of the teaching and research faculty at one of the world's leading universities.
Candidates should be able to demonstrate scholarly and/or professional accomplishments worthy of appointment to a faculty position, including an ability to teach graduate students at a major research university. The School and professorship embrace diversity and seek candidates with the ability to work with and attract dynamic and diverse groups of faculty, staff and students. Candidates should have a strong background in journalism and must be up-to-date with best practices, digital workflow and modern tools used to create and distribute content on various platforms. A work history that shows a capacity to innovate and to be nimble in a fast-changing news environment is also important.
S/he will serve as a member of the full-time faculty of Columbia's Journalism School and as the assistant director at the Tow Center for Digital Journalism will help shape a research program addressing the challenges and opportunities for journalism both now and in the future. We are looking for outstanding candidates who are journalism practitioners, academics, or researchers in one of the following disciplines: computational journalism, data journalism, digital security, disinformation research or reporting, media research or reporting, technology platform research or reporting, newsroom innovation, informatics research or communications studies. A successful candidate for this tenure-track position will have a track record of publishing work at the intersection of journalism and technology, and will preferably have direct experience working in a newsroom or with newsrooms.
As a member of Columbia Journalism School faculty, the successful candidate will be required to teach a variety of courses, as well as advise the cohort of dual masters' students in Computer Science and Journalism. The faculty position is affiliated with the Tow Center for Digital Journalism. As Assistant Director the role requires engagement with the activities of the Tow Center which include developing curriculum materials, identifying research opportunities, conducting research and journalism on relevant subjects, arranging events and workshops and integrating the research work of the Tow Center into the curriculum. The Tow Center is known for its forward-thinking examination of trends and technologies that affect journalism, from the power of large technology platforms in reshaping the news, to the ethical operation of AI in the newsroom, and rapid response research in areas such as the security and resilience of journalists during the COVID pandemic. The successful candidate will work with the Director of the Tow Center and the research team to develop new programming and areas of research and help shape the Center's agenda for the coming decade.
As a full-time member of our faculty, their teaching assignments will be determined each year upon mutual agreement with the deans. The incumbent will also work with faculty and staff to continue to improve the School's curriculum, serve on faculty committees, and take on other tasks as assigned.
