General Summary/Overview Statement
Mass General Brigham's Enterprise Data and Digital Health (EDDH) initiative is working to expand access to digital tools and technologies that address significant health care challenges. The Research Information Science & Computing (RISC) group of Mass General Brigham plays a critical role in ensuring the success of this initiative. Our focus is on accelerating the digital transformation of healthcare by redefining how data is used to improve patient outcomes. To better enable researchers and clinicians, we are building tools, repositories, and new data workflows optimized for data science, machine learning and artificial intelligence.
We are looking for a Cloud Engineer with experience in Microsoft Azure, Linux, Windows, Docker, Kubernetes, and other cloud technologies. The role is responsible for supporting the foundational and infrastructure component of cloud services, particularly in Azure. Using your knowledge, you will execute tasks that support Azure integration with on-prem platforms/services, as well as integration of the platform extension into Azure.
Working closely with the central IS cloud enablement and Information Security & Privacy teams, you will be designing and architecting the azure systems for research and operations analytics workloads, standardizing deployments using Infrastructure as Code to automate and orchestrate the environments.
The Cloud Engineer will have a deep understanding of Azure compute, storage, networking, identity management services and solid experience supporting and integrating hybrid cloud architectures. The job also requires a deep understanding and working knowledge of Azure ARM, Azure DevOps, Git and the release management strategies.
Candidates are not expected to be deeply knowledgeable in all areas but must demonstrate the ability and desire to learn and to support a large and diverse environment. Principal Duties and Responsibilities
• Deploy and support the foundational and infrastructure component of cloud services in Azure for Research projects and DevOps personnel in Research EDDH • Working closely with the central IS cloud enablement and Information Security & Privacy teams to ensure the availability, performance, scalability and security of our service offerings. • Standardize deployments using Infrastructure as Code to automate and orchestrate the environments and implement version control systems and CI/CD pipelines to guarantee as solid change control mechanism across the entire stack. • Implement monitoring solutions for infrastructure (servers and containers) and applications, to ensure health, performance and availability of all services using Azure Monitor and Azure Application Insights. • Design, implement and maintain modern, and easy-to-scale log aggregation solutions with auto-discover capabilities to monitor and troubleshoot infrastructure and application issues using built-in capabilities • Analyze the result of servers, containers and applications using Azure Log Analytics and implement changes to improve performance and resources utilization using Azure Advisor. • Implement and maintain backup and Disaster Recovery solutions using Azure Backup Services to protect Azure VMs, Azure File Shares, SQL Server databases, etc. • Suggest cybersecurity solutions and process improvements to help minimize the risks to computer network defense threats. • In the course of expanding and improving the service capability, you will develop, publish and maintain knowledge base articles and documentation on systems features, best practices and usage, how-to's as well as training and reference materials for the community using the ERIS wiki and knowledge management tools.
Qualifications • BA/BS/engineering degree required or equivalent combination of skills/experience. Advanced degree in engineering or related scientific discipline preferred. • A minimum of 5 years of technical experience working with cloud computing, preferably Azure • Solid understanding of Infrastructure as Code, Azure DevOps or Git and configuration management tools, such as Ansible or Puppet • A combination of education and experience may be substituted for requirements.
• Working knowledge of infrastructure as code (IaC) and DevOps practices and experience using infrastructure automation frameworks such as ARM, Terraform, CloudFormation, etc. • Strong Azure DevOps skills, including code management, build, deployment, CI/CD. • Strong understanding of source code version control systems, Git, and code branching/merging strategies • Working knowledge of data movement between on-prem systems and the cloud and a good understanding of data movement within the cloud (Virtual Networks, Subnets, Network Security Groups, VPN, etc.) • Understanding of Identity and Access Management in the cloud, using technologies and protocols such as Azure AD and OAUTH2, Conditional Access, MFA, Okta, etc. to secure infrastructure and applications. • Able to configure monitoring for production infrastructure and applications. • Knowledge of the following would be advantageous: Azure Data Factory, Event Hub, Azure VMs, Log Analytics, Azure Synapse, Azure Functions, Azure Databricks. • Knowledge of a programming/scripting language (PowerShell, Python, etc.) and how to interact with a REST API or use command line tools. • Strong verbal and written communication, ability to write clear technical documentation. • High level of initiative and eagerness to learn new technologies. • Nice to haves: • Azure Administrator Associate or Azure Certification • Familiarity with information technology security and data privacy considerations applicable to a healthcare environment is advantageous. • MGB has implemented special remote working policies due to COVID-19. These policies are subject to change; however, it is currently expected that this position will work remotely (e.g. from home) full time through June 2021. Potential for 100% remote work past June 2021 based on departmental needs.
