General Summary/Overview Statement: Plans and evaluates network implementations, as well as makes recommendations to design in order to ensure network stability and optimum performance. Configures and deploys physical network components (hubs, bridges, routers, switches, etc). Supervises network operation via network management and diagnostic tools. Troubleshoots and corrects network problems. Documents network components and procedures relative to component configuration, deployment, management, and maintenance. Participates in network design, migration, planning and system integration.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities: Under the direction of the Site/Project Site Lead, provides highly skilled technical support to in-house IS staff, user departments, and third-party liaisons.
Configures, deploys, manages, and maintains network equipment in local-area and wide-area network for Mass General Brigham-affiliated organizations.
Monitors network performance and operation with the network management stations. Troubleshoots network problems via diagnostic tools. Provides consulting services at the highest technical level for remote hospital sites; works with various IS departments to ensure superior application performance and network stability. Monitors network traffic to ensure optimum uptime and performance in a proactive manner. Work with security office to identify possible breaches to network security; help maintain Mass General Brigham firewall and monitor integrity of firewall. Acts as primary liaison between other groups within IS in providing proactive service in implementations of networked applications.
Administers network addresses and configures routing equipment accordingly Occasional after hours and weekend work to perform tasks that cannot be done during business hours. Participates in Network Engineering Site Team on call rotation to troubleshoot major network system issues. Representation Network Engineering Site Team at senior management project meetings. Carries pager and cell phone 24x7.
Performs other duties as assigned
Qualifications Bachelor's degree in a technical field, or equivalent experience.
3+ years experience with networking and internet working devices and software, including at least two years experience with large mission-critical internetworks.
Proven technical project management skills, including demonstrated ability to perform multiple large simultaneous projects Cisco hardware/IOS Cisco CCNA Certification preferred
Skills/Abilities/Competencies Required (MUST be realistic, neither overstated nor understated, and related ot the essential function of the job). High-level technical skill in deploying and maintaining network equipment and internetworking devices.
Demonstrated proficiency in network protocols, including administration and troubleshooting.
Excellent analytic and reasoning skills, particularly in solving large, complex problems.
Ability to assume high levels of responsibility and to work with a minimum of day-to-day supervision.
Ability to function as a member of the Network Engineering team, and to work collaboratively with multiple institutions, departments, and technical, operations, and network staffs across multiple facilities.
Knowledge of the following Technologies: • Web technologies • Routing protocols • Network protocols with strong emphasis on TCP/IP • Customer Service • Routing and switching technologies • Project Management • Firewalls and security
Working Conditions Describe the conditions in which the work is performed • Cubicle • On-call 7 x 24 (Primary on-call approx once every 8 weeks for one week, secondary on-call otherwise) • VPN access from home as needed • Attend meetings as required • Occasional travel within Eastern Mass (Inside Rte 128) • Heavy lifting of equipment as needed
