The Art & Design: Games & Playable Media Program (http://games.arts.ucsc.edu/) (AGPM) at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites candidates working in Games and Playable Media to apply for an Assistant Teaching Professor position.
The BA program in AGPM is a highly interdisciplinary program with curricular and faculty ties to Art, Feminist Studies, and Critical Race and Ethnic Studies, Theater Arts and the MFA in Digital Art and New Media. AGPM BA students form a shared cohort throughout their undergraduate years with students in UCSC's Computer Science: Computer Game Design Bachelor of Science program, and collaborate on the creation of digital and nondigital games during that time. Faculty in this position will be teaching game design, digital art, and critical practices to students from both Engineering and Art backgrounds who have an interest in games. Candidates who will contribute significantly to pro-LGBTQ+, anti-racist, and anti-oppression pedagogy for games, play, and performance are highly desirable. The ideal candidate has an expressive game-making practice, and demonstrates a broad understanding of the scholarly fields of games studies and experimental game design, critical histories of games, and visual art practices. We have a preference for candidates with a multidisciplinary orientation, who are experienced with game design as both a technological and artistic practice. In addition, we seek a candidate with evidence of inclusive teaching practices who can work with undergraduate and graduate students from diverse disciplinary and sociocultural backgrounds. Possible related areas of teaching might include experimental animation, visual design, interactive audio design, interface design, interactive narrative, and media art. The campus currently operates on a schedule of three 11-week quarters per academic year. This appointment will reside in the Arts Division (http://arts.ucsc.edu/). The expected quantity of teaching will generally be higher for teaching professors, with a nominal instructional workload of six five-unit classes per year, although reduced course loads may be given for various administrative duties. Research/creative activity may be in the form of peer-reviewed publications, artistic performance or exhibits, and may also be in the form of invited and contributed presentations. Traditional research is not required or expected, and this category may also be met with scholarly or professional work related to pedagogy, teaching, and student learning. Faculty in the Teaching Professor (Lecturer with Security of Employment) series are evaluated in a process that parallels that of ladder (tenure/tenure-track) faculty, with slightly different criteria. ACADEMIC TITLE Lecturer with Potential Security of Employment (001680) Tenure-track
SALARY Commensurate with qualifications and experience; academic year (nine-month basis).
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS Applicants must have terminal degree in an area of expertise related to Game Design (or equivalent foreign degree) or a demonstrated record of accomplishment and creative work in the field as evidenced by released games, exhibition, and performance of games at conferences, festivals, museums and galleries, nomination for major awards, recognition in the press, and/or publication and critical discussion in the press, journals and other means of presentation. It is expected that the degree requirement will be completed by June 30 2021.
POSITION AVAILABLE July 1, 2021, with the academic year beginning in September 2021. Degree requirements must be met by June 30 2021 for employment effective July 1 2021. Position contingent on budgetary approval.
