University Communications, part of the Office of External Relations, provides support and campus leadership in planning, coordination and implementation of strategic communications programs that support Stanford University and its mission. University Communications is responsible for brand positioning and strategy; issues and reputation management; crisis communications; oversight of digital content and top-level web and social media platforms; media relations and news services; executive communications with all constituencies; major publications; and a campus video productions studio and video production group. University Communications coordinates with communications professionals across the university, provides leadership to the Communications Working Group, and advises on communications policy with senior executive staff.
JOB PURPOSE:
The objective of this web portal Editor is to lead the curation and development of content for Stanford Today, the recently launched portal (https://news.stanford.edu/today/) designed to provide all segments of the campus community - students, faculty and staff - with the information they need to thrive at Stanford. Working with communicators at administrative units and schools across campus as well as within University Communications, this position will oversee the effort to build Stanford Today into the primary source of truth - the website members of the campus community should go for information on all aspects of their campus experience.
This position works in close collaboration with the Stanford Report editor to identify a strong mix of content to include in the daily campus e-newsletter. The position also works closely with University Communications' social and web teams to ensure Stanford Today's success.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
Lead coordination of campus communicators focused on all internal audiences
By building strong connections with key campus communicators, develop a robust system for identifying a comprehensive collection of content for each constituent audience - students, faculty and staff.
Curate content on Stanford Today
Using sound news judgment and calling on an understanding of the needs of the university administration as well as the campus community, edit, select and maintain content for target audiences. Success for this responsibility will require developing a thorough awareness of the campus experience for each audience segment.
Within University Communications, collaborate with the Stanford Report editor to disseminate content as well as the social media team to ensure that we have the right conversion funnel to Stanford Today content.
Lead effort to analyze and utilize metrics for Stanford Today's target audiences
Working closely with University Communications' director of insights and others, develop and execute a plan for utilizing analytics to effectively curate the site, interpret trends and surface the most relevant content for target audiences.
Play a key role in exploration and development of enhancements for the portal
In ongoing efforts to strengthen the impact of Stanford Today through technological enhancements, provide feedback on experience, functionality and desired future improvements on both the tools content contributors need and the delivery systems most effective for target audiences. Success at this responsibility requires an awareness of trends in content delivery systems appropriate for diverse audience segments.
REQUIRED SKILLS KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Bachelor's degree and eight years of relevant experience or a combination of education and relevant experience.
Demonstrated ability to build strong relationships with a diverse group of collaborators.
Excellent organizational skills needed to track, organize and disseminate a large amount of content originating for a wide range of sources.
Strong news judgment guided by the ability to develop a keen understanding of the needs of the institution as well as those of the target audiences.
Strong writing and editing skills, including a demonstrated ability to work with content providers with various levels of expertise.
Demonstrated ability to utilize analytics to inform decision making.
Broad knowledge of current trends in content delivery systems.
Working knowledge of WordPress/Drupal and Google Analytics.
Demonstrated commitment to principles of community and diversity.
