The City University of New York (CUNY) seeks a dynamic and visionary leader to serve as University Dean for Libraries and Information Resources and guide the federation of 31 campus libraries at 24 colleges. The University Dean provides strategic vision and leadership in developing, implementing and assessing CUNY library initiatives and digital resources for the University, and takes a lead role in the integration of CUNY libraries and digital resources with teaching, learning, and research activities at CUNY.
The University Dean collaborates with CUNY's Council of Chief Librarians, Information Technology Steering Committee, Chief Academic Officers Council, Administrative Council, Committee on Academic Technology, Office of Research, Computer Information Services, Office of General Counsel, senior administration, and other stakeholders.
The University Dean provides strategic vision and leadership in developing, implementing and assessing CUNY library initiatives and digital resources for the University, and takes a lead role in the integration of CUNY libraries and digital resources with teaching, learning, and research activities at CUNY. The University Dean leads the CUNY Office of Library Services (OLS) to provide centralized services to the University's libraries that comprises the third-largest university library system in the United States, with nine million print volumes, 250 faculty and professional staff, and 370 additional staff. The OLS has 10 full-time and 9 part-time professional staff, oversees the expenditure of $55 million annually on e-resources, enterprise technology platforms, and discovery and delivery services that support all CUNY libraries. OLS manages and coordinates the CUNY-wide library services platform, discovery, and authentication; cataloging and records management; centralized e-resource procurement and licensing; a centralized scholarly communications office and repository platform; Open Educational Resources (OER) funding and implementation.
Additional responsibilities of the University Dean include:
Provide strategic leadership on the use of library and information resources across CUNY in support of the academic, pedagogical, and research mission.
Direct enterprise library systems and oversee the upgrade of CUNY's integrated library system and ensure that the new library services platform enhances operations and services.
Manage CUNY-wide acquisition, licensing, and management of electronic, print and digital resources and service.
Develop strategies to leverage CUNY's size and scale to lower prices, maximize the electronic and print resources, and services available to all colleges.
Lead CUNY's OER initiative to promote the use of open source teaching materials in CUNY classes to reduce textbook costs. Increase the number of zero-textbook-cost and low-textbook-cost course sections at CUNY to include the allocation and management of CUNY's $4 million budget to support OER initiatives.
Provide support and guidance to CUNY libraries in serving students and faculty, and partner with university stakeholders, including the CUNY Council of Chief Librarians, the IT Steering Committee, and the Committee on Academic Technology to support library and information resources and services.
Manage centralized technical support services to the libraries, including book processing and cataloging.
Promote effective sharing and access to scholarly resources. Collect, preserve, and provide access to CUNY scholarships through the strategic management of CUNY's institutional repository.
Provide professional development opportunities to CUNY library faculty and staff on issues related to copyright compliance, fair use, authorial rights, open access publishing, and alternative forms of publishing.
Manage OLS's $5 million operating budget for personnel, CUNY-wide electronic resources, and technology contracts.
This position is in CUNY's Executive Compensation Plan. All executive positions require a minimum of a Bachelor's degree and eight years' related experience.
The successful candidate will have the following experience, knowledge, skills and abilities:
The Dean will hold a Master's in Library Information Studies (MLIS), or closely related discipline from an ALA-accredited institution, with a second graduate degree required; a strong background in higher education setting and a record of scholarly accomplishment.
The successful candidate will have experience in leadership and interdisciplinary collaboration in a dynamic academic environment, will have effective consultative, negotiation, and communication skills, and will be committed to diversity and promoting a culture that nurtures inquiry and scholarship across multiple disciplines.
Experience managing academic libraries, including budgeting and administration
Accomplished record of fundraising
Demonstrated knowledge and expertise in managing library operations that supports undergraduate and graduate students, and, postdoctoral fellows
Management experience in a complex, multi-unit university or similar institution; demonstrated experience and professional stature to work effectively with University administrators and faculty, and non-profit and private sector leaders
Demonstrated experience in managing library management systems
Strong understanding of the importance of using data for evaluation and program management and ability to implement evaluation outcomes in decision making with multiple stakeholders ranging from program staff, participants, and funders
Strong strategic planning and leadership skills with demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional teams to develop work plans with clear and measurable goals, assess progress, and guide improvement when needed
Strong project and team management abilities, and high integrity
Outstanding written and oral communication skills and ability to effectively engage multiple audiences and demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion
Demonstrated ability to work independently, think strategically, creatively problem solve, and meet deadlines, in a fast-paced, demanding, and complex work environment
Understanding of, and commitment to, CUNY's mission of providing educational access and promoting equity and social mobility for the people of New York City and beyond.

City of New York employees, and employees of Participating Employers, hired on or after July 1, 2019, and their eligible dependents, will only be eligible to enroll in the Emblem Health HIP HMO Preferred Plan, and must remain in the HIP HMO Preferred Plan for the first year (365 days) of employment.
After 365 days of employment, the employee will have the option of either remaining in the HIP HMO Preferred Plan or selecting a different health plan within 30 days before the end of the 365 day period. If a new health plan is selected, the new plan will be effective on the 366th day
An employee who needs to request an exemption from the required enrollment in the HIP HMO Preferred Plan can do so by submitting an Opt-Out Request Form to Emblem Health.
