The Research Development Specialist (RDS) is responsible for increasing institutional research competitiveness through targeted capacity building, supporting strategic initiatives, developing partnerships and interdisciplinary teams, and research related professional development and programming. This position will also support communications about UNCW research, scholarship, and creative activities. We seek a highly collaborative and versatile colleague with attention to detail, impeccable writing skills, strong facilitation skills. The RDS will be a critical and valued member of the the UNCW Office of Research and Innovation (ORI) team, and work to cultivate a strong research culture and growth as a national research university. They will partner with the ORI units to expand externally sponsored programs and innovation. This position reports to the Associate Provost for Research and Innovation.
The primary job duties include:
Lead development and implementation of short-term and long-term strategies and programs to enhance UNCW research, scholarship, creativity, and innovation. This includes managing and expanding existing programs (e.g., Interdisciplinary Research Seminar Series, Research Colliders, Research Symposia).
Convene and coordinate the formation of transdisciplinary, multidisciplinary and/or otherwise collaborative research teams.
Catalyze new cross-disciplinary research initiatives
Consult with faculty about strategies on programs and projects that improve their competitive research capacity to obtain external funding.
Provide research development programs, training, and professional development including workshops and consultations.
Assist with Sponsor site visits.
Contribute to decisions regarding internal funding
Promote and support the development of faculty and researcher applications to prestigious and highly prestigious fellowships, awards, and honors.
Partner with SPARC to identify and distribute external sponsored funding opportunities and provide guidance and interpretation of those opportunities.
Collaborate with the other ORI units to enhance and expand research activities and competitiveness.
Supports project management, grant writing, editing, and review for select large complex research initiatives, and may serve as lead grant writer on targeted institutional initiatives.
Work with the UNCW Office of University Relations and other campus communicators to support the development and dissemination of research stories, the ORI newsletter, the annual Research Magazine, and other publications that support the research enterprise and research engagement.
Raise profile of university strengths that add to visibility or impact of university with external funding sources.
Write news stories and press releases to promote UNCW research, scholarship, creativity, and innovation.
Support posting to UNCWORI social media accounts, and website enhancements.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
Bachelor's degree and one year of experience related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
3 years of related experience working in research development, program development, communications, grant writing or support of extramural grants and contracts.
Excellent skills in grant and technical writing, including structuring of large documents.
Experience writing, editing, and managing complex proposals.
Skills to form and support multi-disciplinary teams to successfully complete projects.
Skilled in program planning and management of projects.
Strong group facilitation skills.
Ability to analyze, present, and critique information in different ways for different end-users.
Ability to take initiative on projects, work individually, and collaborate with teams.
Possess outstanding communication skills, both written and oral.
Ability to communicate effectively and compassionately with various types of customers, faculty, support staff, federal agency representatives, private organization officers.
Strong ability to think creatively and independently on concepts requiring advanced analytic skills.

3 years of experience working in a university department and/or central research administration office.
Project management experience and certification.
Knowledge of Team Science and Collaborative Research techniques.
Experience conducting primary research.
Experience with federal grant systems such as NIH eRA commons, research.gov, and NSF Fastlane.
Experience with electronic research administration tools (e.g., RAMSeS, InfoEd Global, InfoReady Review).
Experience developing and applying a research development matrix for an organization.
Certified Research Administrator (CRA) or Pre-Award (CPRA) certification.
Member of the National Organization of Research Development Professionals (NORDP).
Working knowledge of the Adobe Creative Suite.
Knowledge of research development techniques to boost faculty research programs and impact, and grow institutional research competitiveness.
