Externship Desert Mountain Equine is offering a 1 to 2-week Externship program to 3rd and 4th year students that can compatible with obtaining your required clinical hours or preceptorships (SIPE). We are located in the Town of Queen Creek, Arizona in close proximity to Tonto National Forest, The Salt River Lakes and sightseeing opportunities like Sedona and the Grand Canyon. Desert Mountain Equine is well-known and respected in the community. Dr. Scott Meyer is the practice owner with over 16 years of experience, working in Equine Sport Medicine and Lameness. He has worked with an elite group of racehorses like American Pharaoh and California Chrome. The practice is predominantly Western performance horses, primary care (ambulatory, dentistry, preventive medicine) and emergency medicine. We are innovative and progressive, offering an array of services. Including regenerative medicine (Prostride, Irap, PRP, Stem Cell), general medicine, ophthalmology, emergency medicine and minor surgery. The hospital is equipped with digital radiology, ultrasound, endoscopy/gastroscopy, shockwave and in-house lab equipment. Student Expectation: - Students will have the opportunity to gain “real-world” experience in a practice that is dedicated to patient care and wellness.
- Students will interact with the veterinarian and veterinary staff. Performing and assisting in various procedures including but not limited to, digital radiology and in-house laboratory functions.
- Under-direct supervision, perform physical examinations, develop diagnostic and therapeutic plans.
Prerequisites for Externship: - Primary professional interest in equine veterinary medicine.
- Preference given to 3rd and 4th year veterinary student or a first-year graduate veterinarian.
- Be enrolled in an accredited DVM program.
- You must carry professional liability insurance. AVMA PLIT liability is free for all student members of the AVMA.
Housing: There is no on-site housing, a list of alternative housing options will be provided. Commitment: 1 or 2-week unpaid externship. Airfare and housing provided by the practice owner to the first 4 externs per year, dependent on commitment. Additional space may be available without financial compensation.
