The Systems Engineer provides frontline support to research across a range of disciplines, primarily in the physical sciences. The incumbent provides consultation services to faculty and researchers in developing IT solutions and investments that advance specific research objectives in the context of campus IT infrastructure.
Being successful in this role requires a breadth of abilities including Linux OS, networking, storage, software compiling, testing and installation, and compute cluster support. Applied understanding of scientific research methods is essential.
This person in this position applies advanced IT professional concepts and campus objectives to resolve highly complex issues in one or more IT areas of specialization where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors. Recommends and may select methods, techniques and evaluation criteria to obtain results in a team matrix environment.
This position is a localized ITS staff role generally embedded in the academic divisions and provides personalized, discipline-specific, IT support for faculty, staff and students in accomplishing the academic mission.
We leverage commonalities through cross-divisional technical communities to develop and deliver right-sized/right-priced common services as appropriate, aggregating what we learn to provide as input to ITS.
In this role, you will provide technical leadership and resource management to develop and deliver IT services to researchers, departments and programs in the Physical and Biological Sciences (PBSci). Incumbent works as part of a collaborative team that delivers coordinated IT services to the division and will seek opportunities for creating and making use of shared services across ITS.

Job Duties 35% Respond to incident and service requests in the everyday operational flow to minimize disruption to research and instructional needs.
Utilize ticket tracking system to prioritize and respond to incident and service requests.
25% Manages systems and services for a large facility comprising multiple, highly integrated server/client environments.
Makes recommendations for purchase/upgrade of new computer hardware both independently, as well as, in conjunction with ITS staff members/units.
The environment consists of multiple servers and workstations used for scientific research, instrumentation control and supplying infrastructure support as needed: networking, file sharing, storage and web hosting.
15% Compiles, modifies, debugs, deploys and evaluates software.
Initiates, analyzes, designs, plans and directs key activities in the release management process.
Oversees process and develops standards for migration of software from test to production.
Handle the distribution of licensed software via license servers or single workstation instances.
15% Designs and modifies research compute systems, processes and procedures.
Creates technical specifications for systems with broad impact at a department and/or divisional level. Performs analysis of a department and user need, documentation of requirements, and implementation into system and process requirement specifications.
5% Work on ITS committees and projects as requested. This includes new and improved services that support research and instructional needs, but also services that are considered global for the campus at large.
5% Work with the division computing director (Divisional Liaison) to promote and outline needed research support in terms of hardware and software for the Physical Sciences and Biology Division.
0% - ITS Security Statement Information Technology positions are responsible for the security of UC Institutional Information and IT Resources. The incumbent is required to follow all applicable information security policies, procedures, and standards to maintain minimum standards of information security for data, systems and applications. Supervisors are responsible for making sure their staff have appropriate security skills and qualifications, and complete all appropriate and required security training.
Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
Advanced Linux Operating System Skills.
Advanced skills associated with programming design, modification and implementation. Linux CLI, shell scripting, software firewalls, network configurations and software compiling and installation.
Demonstrated advanced knowledge, skills and abilities associated with system problem identification and resolution.
Knowledge necessary to design, set up, operate and correct malfunctions involving servers and clients. Requires CentOS experience.
Advanced knowledge of computer security tools, best practices and policies including demonstrated experience securing servers: iptables, fail2ban, openssl, selinux.
Ability to write technical documentation in a clear and concise manner.
Familiarity with methods of data management, storage, security, and archiving.
Knowledge of storage technologies that includes JBOD and RAID levels and ZFS with SAS, SATA, iSCSI, NAS Interpersonal skills sufficient to work with both technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization.
Ability to work in a landscape of diverse people including from other countries and language backgrounds.
Work effectively with a team but able to work independently as needed.
