Reporting to the Dean of Columbia Business School, the Vice Dean works closely with the Dean regarding finance and administration, student facing services and executive level large scale projects supporting Columbia Business School initiatives. In addition, the Vice Dean represents the Dean on University wide initiatives, plans, organizes and implements special projects and assumes a major role in decision-making and policy formulation. This role is a senior ranking member of the Dean's senior management staff of the School; direct areas of responsibility include Financial Planning, Operations and Human Resources, Information Technology as well as administrative leadership for the school. Tangential program oversight and consultation to the Dean regarding staffing, budget and administration includes the areas of External Relations, ITG, Marketing and Communications and Executive Education. This position has budget oversight for 280 million dollars.
The Vice Dean of Administration works together with the other Senior Vice Deans and Vice Deans on administrative and academic oversight.
The Vice Dean of Administration serves as a key school liaison with central university units such as Office of General Counsel, EEOA, Provost Office, Central Human Resources, Finance and more.
Dean's Office Initiatives:
The Manhattanville Project: Provides senior - level executive Business School representation with architects, facilities, public officials and other senior University officials; monitoring that the fundraising and operating budgets are consistent with this large scale project.
Capital Campaign: The Vice Dean works with the Dean and Vice Dean for External Relations to plan, analyze and provide detailed financial consultation to the Dean regarding fundraising initiatives integrated with the Business School's overall budget.
Senior Leadership Intervention: This role provides senior management oversight on behalf of the Dean when needed to direct programs whose leaders report to the Dean. Examples include Executive Education, Marketing and Communications and External Relations. Provides budget direction and staffing reorganization approval when appropriate.
Works closely with the Dean to establish financial strategies for the School. Analyzes trends, outcomes and patterns; provides solution oriented plans and advises the Dean on the efficacy of the financial planning results.
Represents the Business School in meetings with the University budget and financial offices concerning budget allocations prior to submission of the School's budget to central administration. Formulates a plan with the Executive Director of Financial Planning and advises the Dean on all budget matters. Monitors the budget and provides the Dean and Senior Management staff with monthly reports, describing all variances.
Oversees the facilities operations, building issues and renovations, determining appropriate policies and initiating changes as needed.
In tandem with the Executive Director of Operations, develops and implements the School's renovation strategy. Liaises with all applicable parties, including University offices and outside contractors.
Oversees the Human Resources department; in tandem with the Senior Director's of HR, creates strategic goals for Business School HR; approves staffing plans, salary budgets, recruitment goals and provides oversight in the areas of compensation.
Bachelor's degree required. M.B.A. or comparable degree strongly preferred. Minimum 8 years related managerial experience (preferably in university administration and operations) or a relevant combination of education and experience highly desirable.
Must be able to react to time-sensitive matters as well as manage complex, longer-term initiatives. Must have excellent Project Management skills. Excellent written and presentation communications skills and experience with supervision of a multifaceted staff also essential, as well as strong budgeting, information technology abilities. Must have keen interpersonal and organizational skills, sound judgment, and a strong sense of discretion. At all times, must exhibit a high degree of diplomacy and set a climate of decorum for the operation of the Office of the Dean.
