The JHU Office of Sustainability (OOS) is seeking strong candidates to fill the position of Sustainability Analyst.The Office's mission is to leverage the potential of Johns Hopkins to develop innovative environmentally and socially responsible solutions that support campus management, teaching, research, and co-curricular opportunities, while benefitting our region and the world. The Sustainability Analyst will play an integral role working across administrative and academic units, as well as with students and external stakeholders to advance the university's sustainability objectives.
The candidate should position JHU to significantly enhance the university's work in sustainability analytics—from data access and collection to interpretation and application. The Sustainability Analyst reports to the Director of Sustainability and is responsible for providing analytic support for all sustainability projects with data-related needs and for setting an overall strategy for the collection, analysis, management, and communication of data and metrics. This individual will synthesize complex data from multiple sources into compelling stories and reports and serve as a liaison to internal and external audiences.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Collect, manage, and ensure the quality and integrity of data from multiple university partners and sources [e.g. energy, water, materials, food, transportation, waste]
Develop relationships with campus-wide partners to ensure efficient and integrated data collection processes and development of robust reporting and analytics
Manage the development of a sustainability analytics database and web-based data hub for internal and external data sharing on JHU's environmental performance
Support the use of the campus as a testbed for innovation, and work with faculty, students, and staff to enhance campus-based applied sustainability research; supervise research assistants and/or interns as needed
Oversee annual greenhouse gas inventory including data collection and aggregation, expansion, and coordination with third-party verification
Support the adoption of software programs and tools that enhance data aggregation, integrity, reporting, and visualization
Develop sustainability financial reporting templates and perform cost analyses where appropriate to support new operational decision making
Collaborate with other members of the OOS to translate complex data into compelling stories and visual representation to the broader JHU community
Evaluate sustainability programs and strategies and provides flexible support to other team members on an as-needed basis
Serve as a content expert on sustainability data and environmental performance metrics to JHU technical subcommittees and working groups
Represent JHU at select conferences, events, and consortia as a means to share research and information and ensure adoption of sector-wide best practices
Work closely with partners in JHU Facilities and Real Estate division to provide analytic support across Plant Operations, Design & Construction, Transportation Services, and Real Estate offices
Coordinate with outside contractors, vendors, and consultants to enhance product selection and services that advance sustainability offerings at the university
Bachelor's degree required in sustainability, environmental science, data science, engineering, or a related field required.
Minimum threeyears of progressive experience in a mix of sustainability, data analysis, database management, software engineering, program/project management, or other related experience in sustainability required.
Additional education may substitute for required experience, and additional related experience may substitute for required education to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Master's degree preferred.
Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Experience with data management, analytics, and statistical programming languages
Highly proficient in MS Office software with advanced knowledge of Excel
Experience using data visualization tools (i.e. Tableau, Power, BI or similar)
Working knowledge of Python and/or
