Job Summary/Basic Function: Job Summary: The Laboratory Technician II for Machining and 3-D Printing supports the missions of teaching and research at Lamar University in manufacturing and fabricating specimen and artifacts. In particular, the technician will coordinate with faculty and departments in engaging student activities in the Makerspace of the Science & Technology Building on machining and 3-D printing projects. The successful applicant is expected to provide excellent customer service to Lamar University community and exemplify the quality of his/her work. The Laboratory Technician will serve students, faculty and staff by providing leadership and working to actively develop knowledge and skills through instruction in a clean and safe working environment. Applicant will provide design and manufacturing expertise, mentoring and technical support to students, faculty and staff. Create and deliver training programs and programmatic activities in the areas of design (CAD/CAM/CAE), including computer-aided design, as well as digital and manual fabrication, including computer controlled lathes, milling machines, manual surface grinders, drill presses, MIG/TIG welding, and digital prototyping equipment. In addition to fabricating and prototyping, applicant will also be expected to perform testing, documentation, record keeping, housekeeping, routine maintenance on machines where applicable, and manage inventory for consumables and supplies. Applicant must be handy, organized, self-motivated, and a life-learner with an established track record of being involved in education and is willing to participate in the educational mission of Lamar University.
Essential Job Functions: 1. Ensure equipment is in operation condition (troubleshoot issues, perform preventive maintenance, and schedule repairs). 2. Maintain, clean, schedule, and ensure safety precautions in Makerspace and affiliated areas. 3. Assist in prototype development using conventional machining and 3D-printing to fabricate metallic and nonmetallic parts. 4. Assist in managing student personnel and daily operations of facilities. Advise students regarding equipment use and appropriate safety precautions. 5. Ensure and safeguard supply inventory and perform annual departmental fixed-asset inventory check. 6. Coordinate with Facilities Maintenance and IT Services to troubleshoot and resolve facility, computer, and technical issues. 7. Attend and participate in group and project meetings. 8. Assist in the laboratory support initiated by the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs
Other duties may be assigned to this position on a regular or occasional basis to respond to needs of the university.
Minimum Qualifications: Minimum Education Required: Two-year associate degree in one of the related technical areas outlined below. Bachelors degree in a science, technology, engineering, or math (STEM) related field preferred.
Minimum Experience Required: At least 2 years of management experience operating in a team environment doing design, fabrication and/or machining; At least 2 years of experience in an academic teaching laboratory and/or class; and At least 5 years of experience working in fabrication from design to production of protypes.
Key Competencies: Experience operating conventional machining equipment (lathes, mills, jib borers, grinders, shapers, drill press, MIG/TIG welding, plasma table, etc.); Ability to troubleshoot and resolve issues independently; Ability to effectively communicate with a multi-cultural workforce; Understanding of laboratory safety issues; Ability to work with faculty and students on instructional and research projects; A high degree of intellectual curiosity, extending to disciplines beyond ones own; and Experience building and maintaining an institutional culture that encourages and supports research and investigation.
Physical Requirements: With or without accommodation will require an individual to perform physical tasks involved in the manufacture and production of testing equipment in a fabrication shop. Some activities could involve applicant to work outdoor in full sun, rain, heat and cold. Will frequently be required to perform desk-based computer tasks, use telephone, speak clearly have adequate listening comprehension
Job Conditions: This position may require occasional evening and/or weekends to meet university and departmental needs.
