The USC Dornsife Public Exchange is an initiative unlike any other at the University. Founded in 2020, the Public Exchange fast-tracks collaborations between academic researchers and the public and private sectors to define, analyze, and solve complex problems together. Working across disciplines and practice areas, the Public Exchange team is building a new kind of project management infrastructure inside the university that enables researchers and problem solvers to collaborate rapidly and flexibly on a wide-range of issues, from public health to sustainability and many more.
Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Strategy and Operations will play a key leadership role in building and scaling the Public Exchange. As a successful candidate, you have a management consulting or entrepreneurial background with demonstrated success in building partnerships and delivering cost-effective solutions for clients. You have a strong interest in and understanding of research, data, and evidence-based approaches. You are a problem-solver and an operations guru who loves the challenge of building something from the ground up. You are passionate about social impact and leveraging knowledge and research expertise in new ways to make real progress on intractable challenges.
Lead operations for the Public Exchange. Manage staff and day-to-day operations to develop and execute projects efficiently; refine project management processes to adopt new methodologies, standards and tools; address client questions; and ensure successful delivery on-time and on-budget. Identify methods to address pain points and streamline key processes, including project documentation development, legal and IP review, researcher agreements and payment schedules, data use agreements and others.
Work closely with the Executive Director and the Public Exchange team to lead organizational strategic planning, set targets, and track project portfolio execution against the strategy.Â Â
Create a learning organization by standardizing project evaluation processes and instituting agile project management techniques.
Identify opportunities to build Public Exchangeâs knowledge base, fueling strategic thinking about our partnersâ challenges and seeking opportunities to leverage our research insights in new ways. Work directly with partners to understand, capture and disseminate key insights from project work.
Play a leading role in new project development by working with the Executive Director to set targets and institutionalize new business development processes; lead and support proposal development.
Represent Public Exchange to a variety of key USC Dornsife stakeholders.
A minimum of 10 years experience. Management consulting or entrepreneurial/start-up experience preferred.
Bachelorâs degree required
Advanced/MBA degree preferred
Track record delivering superior results in leadership roles
Experience leading strategic planning and operations functions
Proven ability to work with efficiency, flexibility and reliability
Exceptional ability to work in a dynamic organization, manage complexity, navigate ambiguity, and facilitate change
Demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships and partnerships with a wide array of stakeholders and audiences - junior & senior; government, non-profit and industry; and from diverse backgrounds
Outstanding leadership, communication, interpersonal and organizational skills
Passionate about the Public Exchangeâs mission and impact
