This position will focus on storytelling about the work of two programs, the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) and Substance Use Disorders and Recovery Program. The person in this role will highlight how the programs and their community partners are making meaningful change across Minnesota. These stories will be told via website postings, videos, podcasts, infographics, blog posts, newsletters and social media published by University of Minnesota Extension and its Center for Family Development.
Write and edit original, interesting and persuasive stories with a focus on people-centered narratives that convey complex ideas and processes for a general audience
Use photos, video and other digital content tools in storytelling and help colleagues develop their multimedia skills
Build relationships with community influencers and networks
Coordinate editorial planning with communications colleagues in the center and across Extension
Use metrics to evaluate and report on stories’ reach and impact
Manage social media channels for EFNEP and the Substance Use Disorder and Recovery project at the state and county level
Create reports, factsheets and presentations for project leaders
Meet or exceed University and Extension branding and accessibility requirements
Attend regular EFNEP and Substance Use and Recovery Team meetings
Provide technical assistance to staff using technology to deliver online/remote education.
Participate in state and national committees and work groups that enhance the recruitment, retention, and engagement of participants and partners.
Align with federal program policies for technology and social media and with University of Minnesota Extension policies and requirements
Maintain knowledge of relevant research
This is a full-time (40 hours/week) temporary appointment funded through 8/30/2022. Minimum hourly pay is $16.77 ($34,881 annual), plus full University of Minnesota benefits package applies, https://humanresources.umn.edu/new-employees/benefits-summaries. This role will work remotely until Extension campus and regional offices re-open. Reimbursement for travel and subsistence is available in accordance with University policy.
Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, writing, journalism, or related field or a combination of related education and work experience to equal at least four (4) years.
Excellent writing and interviewing skills
Demonstrated experience creating high-quality multimedia including photography, video filming and editing, PowerPoint, infographics
Experience managing organizational social media sites
Ability to work independently as well as in a group setting
Ability to interact effectively with diverse groups of people, and demonstrated commitment to equity and inclusion
Experience working with diverse limited-resource audiences and the agencies that serve them
Valid driver's license and reliable vehicle with required liability insurance, to be utilized for travel.
Personal cell phone that can be used, as needed, for work purposes.
Ability to maintain a flexible work schedule, including occasional evening or weekend work, to meet the special needs of programs.
Access to a reliable internet connection and ability to work remotely when Extension offices are closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Training on and/or experience related to health promotion, nutrition, substance use disorders or public health
Experience creating and managing mass email campaigns
Experience writing original stories, plus proofing and editing experience
Familiarity with best practices in website publishing and content creation
Demonstrated ability to work with people and organizations that represent significant diversity in culture, values, education, occupation, income and changing rural demographics
Commitment to the mission of University of Minnesota Extension.
Written and verbal Spanish fluency preferred, but not required
Maintain positive relationships with county, regional, state and federal partners.
Participate in local, regional, state, and/or national programmatic workgroups and committees.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, there is currently no travel. However, 10% travel may be required in the future within the state and within the continental US with some overnight stays to implement programming and assist/educate/monitor and provide project support.
