The Oregon National Primate Research Center (ONPRC) is located12 miles westof the OHSU main campus, and sits on 162 acres of land featuring forested areas, research and administration buildings, indoor and outdoor animal housing, a pond, and 2-mile perimeter walking path. Our mission is to improve human health and the quality of life through the support of nonhuman primate research programs that advance our knowledge of the causes, preventions, treatments, and cures of debilitating diseases. The ONPRC Integrated Pathology Core (IPC) provides high-quality, state-of-the-art conventional and advanced histology, microscopy, and image analysis services and expertise to investigators and pathologists at the institutional, regional, and national level in support of research using NHP models in studies relevant to human health and disease. The IPC provides an integrated and comprehensive environment and infrastructure, working with investigators to meet their research pathology needs at all stages from project design through support of manuscript preparation. The IPC serves diverse research programs in neuroscience, reproductive and developmental biology, cardiometabolic health, and immunology and infectious disease in NHP models, as well as the histology needs for diagnostic support of the ONPRC NHP colony. The successful IPC Director candidate will: i) provide critical expertise in histotechnology approaches, including advanced immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization, digital pathology, and image analysis, and be highly proficient and able to interact and converse with veterinary pathologists about the histopathology NHP models of disease; ii) implement and develop new assays and approaches to provide continued state-of-the-art resources to investigators; iii) hire and supervise manager, research assistant/associate, and histology technician-level employees; iv) ensure efficient and cost-effective delivery of services; and v) have superior oral and written communication skills. - Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM/VMD) and/or PhD degree in relevant biomedical field
- 7+ years of relevant postdoctoral work experience
- 4+ years of supervisory experience
- Prior experience in comparative and research pathology
- Prior experience in digital pathology and image analysis
- Prior experience with designing and completing research projects
- Prior experience and/or knowledge of microscopy platforms such as confocal, fluorescence, laser-capture and stereology, as well as IHC and in situ hybridization
- Experience in mammalian histology
- Excellent organizational and scientific communication skills (written and oral)
- Laboratory, computer, and database experience
- Experience in recruiting, managing, and evaluating performance of technical staff
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Ability to carry and lift up to 50 pounds
- Ability to stand for four continuous hours a day
- Able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without accommodation
- Diplomate, American College of Veterinary Pathologists (ACVP)
- Advanced training in veterinary pathology (board eligible equivalent)
- MS in relevant biomedical field
- Familiarity with advanced IHC procedures such as RNAscope and digital analysis tools such as HALO, Cell Profiler, etc.
- Experience with image analysis algorithm development
- Experience with NHP research
- Experience with interpretation of normal and pathologic NHP tissues
