The University president regularly communicates with various audiences on and off campus. These include members of the university community, civic groups, and businesses, members of the legislature, UT System and others at the local, state and national levels. The Director of Presidential Communications develops a wide range of communications on behalf of the President. The successful candidate will work closely with the President, Chief of Staff, VP for Government Relations, Chief Communications Officer and also in conjunction with the University Advancement team to craft communications, including correspondence, formal speeches, presentations, social media, video recordings and other collateral materials for the President. The Director of Presidential Communications will also work with relevant members of the leadership and deans' councils and their teams in coordinating the content and delivery of the communications as needed.
Research and draft correspondence, letters, speeches, presentations, video messages and other materials to support the communication priorities of the President. Work closely with the President to gather information to synthesize and finalize drafts. Assist in managing the President's social media including drafting and posting messages, and collaborate with the University social media team. Maintain and oversee the Office of the President web and digital content; maintain biographies for the president and ensure that the President's website and web assets including videos, messages and speeches are updated. Ensure the accuracy of all facts and details in speeches, statements and quotes issued on behalf of the President and official statements on behalf of the President's Office; collaborate proactively and effectively with University Advancement and other parties inside and outside the University related to the President's written or spoken words, photos and videos, social media and events.
Bachelor's degree. Five plus (5+) years of relevant experience or the equivalent experience. Superb writing capabilities, including an ability to write quickly, persuasively, clearly and in the president's style on a wide variety of subjects related to the University and higher education, at times on tight deadlines. Demonstrated aptitude for understanding complex issues, and the ability to translate and simplify them for key audiences. Ability and willingness to meet the president's expectations for written style and content, and to accept and respond to revisions and advice rapidly and effectively. Flexibility and adaptability, including a willingness to undertake both mundane and high-profile tasks with enthusiasm and energy. A demonstrated ability to attend carefully to both grammatical and factual details. Demonstrated experience in story development, journalistic writing skills, as well as advanced editorial skills. Strong experience in computer skills and ability to utilize a variety of programs, including Microsoft Office suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Teams, etc.), social media platforms (Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, etc.) and other presentation tools. Ability to take initiative and work independently. Work discreetly on sensitive or delicate assignments, exercise sound editorial judgement. Exceptional organizational skills and proven ability to keep track of and meet numerous deadlines; ability to handle multiple tasks in a timely manner and effectively re prioritize responsibilities. High level of discretion and excellent judgment; ability to work with and manage confidential information. Expected to be available on evenings and weekends.
Master's degree in a relevant discipline. Five plus (5+) years of relevant experience or the equivalent experience. Progressive experience in supporting executive level positions. Experience at, or extensive familiarity with, institutions of higher education strongly preferred. Experience in communications within the corporate or political sector as a successful writer, in a journalistic, speech writing, academic, or other related context.
