: The Human-Computer Interaction Institute is seeking a postdoctoral researcher with skills in HCI, design research, and/or social computing to conduct research on the impact of automation in the hospitality industry. This role is primarily dedicated to study design, data collection, and project management related to research on the Future of Work.
Current research predicts that the hospitality industry will experience significant job shifts in the coming decades, as a result of technological innovation. The hospitality sector is singled out as among the most at risk to automation. Innovations in this area include self-service kiosks, various applications of robotics, customer-facing AI, automated operations, and food preparation technologies, among others. In the hospitality industry, automation has already eliminated and shifted existing jobs and created new jobs through innovations around hotel room check-in, cashiering, cleaning processes, bartending, and food service. Intelligent devices and apps have reduced the need for human interaction and shifted hotel services.
Without the ability to collectively design, bargain, and engage in worker-oriented research and training, today's workers have no way of shaping the future of automation. Our proposed research seeks to collectively envision the impacts of technology innovation, to give workers a chance to share in the prosperity and advancements created by innovation, and to find new ways for society to reap the economic benefits of new technologies while maximizing opportunities and positive outcomes for individuals in the hospitality workforce. We will work with the largest hospitality workers union in North America. This collaboration creates a unique opportunity for innovation focused on identifying challenges hospitality workers experience due to emerging technology, defining the pipeline of innovations in hospitality, evaluating workforce issues including training challenges and deficiencies, and examining policy questions and options.
Conduct literature review on areas of focus.
Help to design, pilot, and conduct collaborative workshops with union members; analyze data.
Assist in the development of a strategic roadmap to understand how automation will impact the union and its members.
Lead project management including planning, scheduling and conducting research activities, modifications of IRB protocols as needed for conducting research with participating sites.
Organize regular meetings with participating organizations and project team members to monitor implementation progress and work products; maintaining effective project team communications.
Assist with writing academic publications.
Experience with HCI user research, design research, participatory design methods and analysis products
Quantitative data collection, analysis, and presentation skills, including the ability to quickly learn new software programs and work with data in different environments and formats
Qualitative and mixed methods data collection, analysis and presentation skills, including instrument design, coding and demonstration that intervention best practices have been maintained
Applicants should have a doctorate in human-computer interaction, psychology, design, social computing, or a related field. They should have completed strong, compelling PhD research in one (or more) of these areas.
We are looking scholars who have strong methodological backgrounds in both design and research methods, and a propensity toward innovation in methods for design and user research. Applicants need strong technical skill with interactive digital technologies.
