The Brotman Baty Institute for Precision Medicine (BBI) is looking for a candidate to fill a unique scientist position at the intersection of genomic technology development and medicine. The institute bridges the University of Washington, the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and Seattle Children’s Hospital. The BBI Advanced Technology Lab, is the only physical lab at the institute, it is co-directed by Lea Starita and Jay Shendure at the University of Washington. The mission of Advanced Technology is to make cutting-edge ‘-omics’ technologies, including many developed by labs at the member institutions, broadly available to the institute’s research community. A major roadblock in fully realizing the potential of precision medicine is our lack of ability to understand the effect of genetic variants identified by genetic testing. The Advanced Technology lab will bring mutational scanning methods to production scale to increase the availability of functional data to inform variant interpretation.
The Advanced Technology lab has a large budget and broad institutional support which will help us achieve maximum success. Building this lab, completing the mutational scanning projects and enabling the community to perform mutational scans will have an immediate and powerful impact on the practice of precision medicine. This is especially so because of the placement of the BBI at the intersection between research labs and the clinic. Your contributions will be recognized not only in Seattle by the BBI community but nationally and internationally, as you will have ample opportunities to lead publications as well as to attend/present at conferences. We anticipate this role has growth potential analogous to that of Institute Scientists at the Broad Institute (Broad Institute), many of whom are well recognized leaders in their field.
Under the direction of Drs. Jay Shendure and Lea Starita, the Director of Mutational Scanning will manage all aspects of mutational scanning efforts. The scientist should have experience in molecular biology and genomics, experience with large-scale efforts would be a plus.
The Advanced Technology Lab will continue to optimize and offer services based on technologies developed by institute labs in Genome Sciences and elsewhere. The candidate will also work with the other more clinically focused platforms at the Brotman Baty Institute to aid in translating the methods from the Advanced Technology lab into the clinic. The candidate will have the ability to shape the goals and culture of the lab. A portion of your time will also be reserved for the development of new, related technologies.
You would participate in Shendure lab and Center for Multiplexed Assessment of Phenotype (CMAP) meetings and functions to help build community and communications between the Advanced Technology lab and those groups. The Shendure lab and CMAP together are full of very smart, helpful and fun individuals with unique and diverse scientific strengths.
Scientific Operations (50%):
•Develop, optimize, and implement mutational scanning experiments and assays: oIncrease scale of mutational scanning experiments oAdapt workflows to automation •Engineer saturation genome editing and other mutational scanning methods to make them more amenable to production and automation. •Oversee the production of reagents for mutational scanning that will be available to the community for a fee, including barcoded variant libraries and saturation genome editing reagents.
Scientific Project Management (50%):
•Oversee technicians working on saturation genome editing and mutational scanning production projects, experiments, and data analysis. •Develop and oversee a production schedule. •Manage ongoing collaborations and experiments using project management tools such as Trello •Oversee the development of a more robust and extensible data analysis pipeline for saturation genome editing. •Consult with collaborating labs in the BBI community on best-practices for designing mutational scanning experiments. •Attend Shendure lab, BAT-lab huddles, and CMAP meetings and functions •Communicate results and progress reports directly to Lea Starita and Jay Shendure. •Communicate results more broadly at scientific conferences and symposia.
· M.S degree in molecular biology, cellular biology, genetics or related discipline, or equivalent experience. · 4 years of experience in functional genomics or high-throughput methods. · Candidate should have an outstanding academic and professional track record. · Some managerial experience, or at least a strong interest and willingness to learn. · Candidate should be an innovative and analytical thinker with outstanding interpersonal and communication skills. Must be highly disciplined and organized. · Successful candidate will be highly self-motivated and enthusiastic about taking a hands-on approach to collaborative scientific discovery efforts.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
· Ph.D. degree in molecular biology, cellular biology, genetics or related discipline with significant experience in high-throughput functional genomic research · 3+ years post-doctoral experience in functional genomics. · Significant managerial and mentoring experience.
