Position: Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Trevor Day School, a Nursery through Grade 12 co-educational independent day school of 720 students in Manhattan seeks a full-time Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI). We seek a person of experience, vision, and commitment that will help lead our school to the next level of engagement thereby ensuring a school grounded in the principles of justice and equity. The Director of DEI will advance our mission to:
educate college-bound students to achieve academic and personal excellence in an inquiry-driven, idea-rich community
celebrate diversity of thought, experiences, and culture
promote compassion, collaboration, courage, and creativity
develop in children a recognition of their own unique potential as lifelong learners and leaders who act as responsible global citizens
The Director of DEI will report directly to the Head of School, sit on the school-wide Trevor Leadership Team, be responsible for the leadership and coordination ofschool DEI efforts Nursery through grade 12, and work with the assistance of part-time diversity practitioners.
Duties will entail:
Leading efforts to meet goals set by the School’s DEI Strategic Plan, which include:
recruitment, hiring, and retention of a diverse group of faculty, staff, and students
work to provide all members of the school community—faculty, staff, administrators, students, and families—with tools to facilitate emotional and ethical awareness and skill, so that inquiry-based learning about diversity, inclusion, and engagement occurs in a context of courageous mutual discovery and respect
Providing periodic reports to the community on the progress toward the above goals
Revisiting the above goals based on the 2020-21 school year NAIS AIM survey results
Coordinating yearly required DEI faculty professional development and maintaining resources to support this work
Facilitating affinity groups for parents, staff, and students
Serving on the standing DEI Committee of the school’s Board of Trustees
Providing guidance on programming for parents and alumni in area of DEI
Working with Marketing and Communications Department on social media campaigns, web resources, and other print and digital collateral
Coordinating with department heads to ensure the implementation of an anti-racist curricular focus within Nursery through grade 12
Executing other responsibilities at direction of Head of School
Applicants should have:
Bachelor's degree in appropriate field of study, Masters degree preferred
Up-to-date working knowledge of anti-racist curriculum and practices
Ability to listen to others, provide emotional support to community constituents, and provide a voice of unity
Superior communication skills
Ability to collaborate effectively with various school constituencies
Resilience and a sense of humor
Ability to lead with a focus on education and engagement
Developed cultural competencies, skilled at inspiring and leading open, productive, and challenging conversations about identity, diversity, and inclusion in professional and community contexts
Dedication to being a lifelong learner with personal and professional integrity and the capacity to model acceptance, empathy, and openness
