The Tennessee Department of Health is seeking a dynamic, self-motivated, organized, and dedicated individual to serve as the Public Health Regional Director for the East Tennessee Region – providing executive management in all public health related programs and services throughout the region.
The East Region is the second largest rural region in the state with an estimated population of more than 782,300 and consists of the 15 counties surrounding Knox County. Within these 15 counties are 15 health department clinic sites including eight dental facilities and four counties that provide primary care services. The incumbent will be responsible for managing approximately 350 state and county staff and an annual budget of more than $28.5 million.
As the highest-ranking public health official in the East Region, this individual will be responsible for the administrative, clinical, and medical operations within each county health department as well as the regional public health office.
The Regional Director for the East Tennessee Region will work closely with the Assistant Commissioner of Community Health Services of the Tennessee Department of Health on regional operations which includes managing all public health activities at the local and regional level. Programs offered throughout the region include but not limited to the following: Women, Infants, and Children (WIC), Family Planning, Immunizations, Primary Care, Emergency Preparedness, Clinical Dental and School-Based Dental, Health Education and Promotion, Home Visitation, and Breast and Cervical Cancer.
Additionally, this individual will work with the Assistant Regional Director, County Directors, and Program Directors to develop operations and provide overall guidance in program planning, development and evaluation. This individual will supervise a multidisciplinary team, including seven County Directors who are responsible for day-to-day operations of the 15 counties as well as various staff within the Regional Office, and will be responsible for monitoring staff productivity and clinic flow to assure the effective and efficient delivery of services. All county health departments are operated in partnership between state and county governments. As a result, this individual will work with County Mayors and County Boards of Health to assure the adequacy of public health funding and facilities.
A minimum of 5 years of any professional public health experience; or experience involved in fiscal and personnel management in a public health setting
At least 5 years of full-time supervisory work or managerial experience
Experience in project management (business, management, budgeting and analysis)
Experience in quality and/or process and performance improvement
Hold a master’s degree in Health, Public Health, Health Education or Public Health Administration
Professional experience in healthcare organizations, public health or health practice in Tennessee
