Department Summary: The Assistant Director of Communications provides strategic leadership for a variety of communication efforts for The University of Alabama. The Assistant Director demonstrates good news judgment and outstanding public relations and journalism skills; supports public relations efforts to increase positive news and earned media coverage; cultivates relationships that advance the University; and disseminates information that supports the goals of the University. Reports to the Director of Communications.
This position is responsible for high-level reports and campaigns to internal and external audiences and developing strategy to enhance relationships with a variety of audiences. This position reviews analytics and insights from a variety of sources and develops reports, specialty publications and strategies to enhance communication efforts across the department to help meet UA’s strategic priorities and goals. This position will lead efforts to use data and analytics to drive better communication and better align communications with student recruitment, retention and success efforts.
This position requires the ability to work overnights and weekends on crisis issues.
Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Master’s degree and at least three (3) years of experience in direct communications and/or public relations responsibilities OR a bachelor’s degree and at least five (5) years of experience in direct communications or public relations. Considerable demonstrated skills in writing and editing, interpersonal interactions, diplomacy, marketing, and a keen knowledge of relevant issues and trends in news and higher education.
Skills and Knowledge: Proficiency in computer skills. • Exceptional written and oral communication and interpersonal skills, with demonstrated project management, strategic thinking, and leadership skills required. Relevant experience managing relationships. • AP Style • Content Management Systems like WordPress • Story distribution platforms like Meltwater, Merit • Electronics newsletter platforms like MailChimp • Analytics monitoring platforms like Google Analytics • Strong organizational skills and ability to communicate
Preferred Qualifications: Master’s degree in related field with 3 years of experience in managing or supervising. . Excellent written and oral communication skills. Proficiency in computer skills. Considerable demonstrated skills in writing and editing, interpersonal interactions, diplomacy, marketing, and a keen knowledge of relevant issues and trends in news and higher education.
