Northwestern School of Professional Studies (SPS) is committed to helping its professional students advance their career. SPS Student Services is looking for an energetic student affairs specialist who can design and deliver excellent guidance for online students located across the country and globe. The Academic Adviser will join a team of student-centered and forward-thinking advisers who are entrusted to provide proactive support for adult students and innovative student service efforts.
The Academic Adviser serves as a resource for students to support their career and academic advancement. In addition to academic planning and guidance, this role will also cultivate and expand career resources and events for all SPS students. Advisers are expected to be experts in student support, rather than subject matter experts.
Advising: Provide high-quality academic advising and career development service to a high-achieving and largely online student population, with a focus on continual improvement of department practices.
Proactively advise track students in regards to degree requirements, policies and procedures, career development and planning, time management and course load management, and strategies for success.
Leverages technology and develops new ways to best serve the greatest number of students effectively.
Manages, researches, and proposes improvements based on student feedback.
Helps develop and implement best practices, processes, and training to achieve Student Service team goals.
Communication: Creates and executes targeted communication campaigns to engage and inform students, and promote relevant advancement opportunities
Conceives, writes, and designs new communications across a variety of channels (e.g., email, student portal, web) to provide timely and relevant information in support of undergraduate and graduate student advising and student services
Researches and stays up-to-date with the latest trends and best practices on student messaging, use of language, and effective modalities; suggests improvements to current methods to optimize digital student engagement.
Updates and maintains digital content (website, student portal, etc.) that describe, highlight, and explain resources and services.
2-3 years academic advising experience

Experience supporting online learners
Experience crafting effective messaging to large audiences
Experience implementing technology in serving students
Experience creating and executing webinars and student events

Experience providing academic advising to students in a two- or four-year higher education environment
Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills
Strong organizational and time management skills
Excellent written and oral communication skills

Ability to take initiative and problem solve
Ability leverage technology to improve workplace processes
Ability to collaborate and work well in a team environment
Skilled in Microsoft office software
Open to coaching/feedback to enhance job performance

Familiarity with student information systems
Experience working with CRM/database
Advanced in Microsoft Office suite and Adobe products
