Stanford University, Department of Anesthesiology, Pain & Perioperative Medicine is seeking a Life Science Research Professional 1 to perform functions and activities involved in defined research projects, and independently conduct and analyze experiments. The LSRA will be involved in funded research projects to study the impact of e-cigarette exposure on the cardiovascular system in rodents. A majority of the work performed at this time will be exposing rodents to e-cigarettes and also performing cutting-edge gas mass spectrometry to characterize aldehyde levels in e-cigarette aerosol.
We are an Anesthesiology research lab at Stanford studying the effects of aldehyde production and metabolism on human health. These findings in our lab may provide the basis for developing a precision health platform for the 560 million people in the world who cannot efficiently metabolize aldehydes (such as acetaldehyde produced from alcohol). We are primarily looking to hire a LSRP who can provide technical support for the e-cigarette projects in the lab, including exposing rodents to e-cigarette aerosol and measuring aldehyde levels in e-cigarette aerosol using gas mass spectrometry. The person ideally should have 1-2 years research experience and be proficient in rodent handling. Additional experience in mass spectrometry and molecular biology techniques such as Western Blot, and immunofluorescence would be beneficial but not required. Funding for these projects is presently supported by the NIH through 2022.

Plan and perform experiments in support of research projects in lab and/or field based on knowledge of scientific theory. Interpret and perform basic analyses of results.
Review literature on an ongoing basis to remain current with new procedures and related research.
Offer suggestions regarding modifications to procedures and protocols in collaboration with graduate post-doctoral individuals. Make recommendations on the research design and direction. The LSRP is expected to plan and coordinate an experiment from beginning to end. Responsible for interpretation of data and findings and maintaining detailed records of experiments and outcomes, suggesting modifications to existing procedures when needed may also be required to recommend changes in policy, or develop new protocols to prevent reoccurrence of problems. Must keep an accurate laboratory notebook for all studies.
Maintain detailed records of experiments and outcomes.
Contribute to publication of findings as needed. Participate in the preparation of written documents, including procedures, presentations, and proposals.
Help with general lab maintenance as needed; maintain lab stock, manage chemical inventory and safety records, and provide general lab support as needed.
Help orient and train new staff or students.

Bachelor of Science in biology, biochemistry, bioengineering or science-related major.
Prior experience handling rodent animals for research
Experience with mass spectrometry and/or molecular biology techniques
Minimum of one year of previous research experience
Demonstrated skills and experience in multi-tasking and time management
Prior project management experience.
