For over 50 years, The Gateway School has transformed the lives of bright children who experience academic difficulty as a result of language-based learning disabilities, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), executive function disorder, or auditory processing difficulties. Located on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, Gateway enrolls approximately 180 students between the ages of 5-14. Our recently renovated, LEED Silver-certified facility features spacious room design and top-quality construction.
The Director of Safety and Facilities (DSF) reports to the Chief Financial and Operating Officer (CFOO) and is responsible for ensuring that the school facility, systems, equipment, and safety procedures are maintained at a high standard reflective of the quality of the institution and to meet the daily and long-range needs of The Gateway School. The Director of Safety and Facilities supervises the daily activities of the Facilities Manager, who supervises a four-person staff and contracted cleaning company. This position develops and executes the strategy for the maintenance and operation of the campus, is a member of the Emergency Response Team (Chain of Command), manages school safety and compliance procedures, guides the Head of School and CFOO on condominium building issues, and is the School’s main point of contact with its tenant and the condominium facilities team and owners. The Director of Safety and Facilities is on call 24/7 to address after-hours emergencies and projects/events (including weekends).
Bachelor's degree preferred.
Ten years of related work experience is required with experience in an education setting a plus. Related experience could entail construction, plant engineer, project management, or facility management.
Proven personnel management skills and contractor management experience, with aptitude to judge quality of performance in all major technical trades. Personal experience in at least one technical trade (carpentry, mechanical, electrical, structural) a plus.
Knowledge of building maintenance, management, and best practices.
Technology user skills sufficient to prepare reports in Excel and Word, and aptitude to operate key systems such as HVAC and security.
Experience in developing and implementing safety/risk management training and practices.
Ability to create and manage annual budgets and long-term maintenance and capital repair budgets.
Strong communication skills and confidence in conveying information to all school community constituents.
Commitment to the school’s needs and readiness to respond 24/7 as reasonable and necessary.
