The Institute for Innovation in Development, Engagement, and Learning Systems (IDEALS) at Johns Hopkins University School of Education seeks a Sr. Instructional Designer to support its sponsored projects. The Sr. Instructional Designer will lead instructional design efforts across an array of Institute projects as part of the Workforce Development team. This position will provide direct and indirect collaboration with colleagues across the Institute, School of Education, and University. Work will focus on helping to inform the use of instructional design and educational technology tools; building alternative learning pathways for adults; learning object development; competency creation and evaluation with design elements; integration with learning management systems; and communication with project partners and sponsors.
This position is responsible for working with a team of subject-matter experts (SMEs) to develop content, identify and build learning pathways, and design interactive and performance-based experiences that help learners of all backgrounds meet with success in building their competency. Additionally, this position will be responsible for ensuring accessibility through an integrated UDL approach and will establish a vision for scaling a competency learning model to other sectors.
The ideal candidate will have a passion for multiple modes of learning and meeting the needs of unique learners. The work requires application of that passion to collaborate on creative solutions that make learning experiences and assessments more engaging, confidence-building, efficient, and effective in measuring knowledge and skills of learners with a wide range of backgrounds and experience. We are seeking an innovator who understands foundational approaches to instructional design, while embracing and applying new ways of meeting the learning needs of young children, youth, and adults. This position will develop into a role with direct management responsibility for a team of contractual workers and indirect relationships with technology developers. All direct and indirect reporting are expected to increase with the growth of projects.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
Support and implement creative solutions for instructional design and development processes
Collaborate with the core team, front-end developers, visual designers, and technologists to build innovative learning experiences
Support the development of learning solutions, including modules, assessments, and learning objects for formal and informal instruction
Integrate modules, assessments, and learning objects with a range of learning management systems
Continually improve and maintain existing web-based learning resources through design, evaluation, revisions and enhancements
Support UDL, ADA, Section 508 and WCAG 2.0 compliant content for online learning assets (i.e., ensure all videos, content, and graphics are properly developed with ADA, Section 508 guidelines, and WCAG 2.0)
Implement quality assurance processes to ensure that online experiences are functional and error free
Coordinate access and deployment activities with various teams to ensure that learning experiences meet project goals, scope, and timeline
Collect, analyze, and report data on the program progress, challenges, and areas for improvement
Contribute to staff development opportunities that will promote teaching, learning, and assessment in areas related to learning strategies, instructional technology, and learning outcomes
Assist with writing, copy editing, and scripting for online learning solutions
Represent IDEALS at larger School, University, and field-based workgroups, committees, and conferences related to instructional design, learning, and UDL
Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):
Graduate degree in instructional design, instructional technology, education, or related field
Three years of professional level experience in course design and development, faculty training, or program/course assessment/evaluation required
Significant additional related experience may substitute for advanced degree
Four or more years of progressively responsible experience developing technology-based learning projects and programs; with management experience preferred
Quality Matters (QM) or Online Learning Consortium (OLC) certification is preferred
Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Experience with and vision for applying gamification, SCORM/X-API, open-badging, micro-credentialing, and performance-based demonstration to a variety of learning experiences
Experience in the practical application of instructional design theory
Skilled in all instructional design processes, needs assessments, design, development, teaching, implementation, and evaluation/assessment, including developing rubrics
Expertise in e-learning authoring tools such as the Articulate tool suite
Expertise in web conferencing tools (e.g., Zoom) and learning management systems (e.g., Blackboard, Canvas)
Knowledge of social media tools and their application in teaching, learning, and research
Skilled in content storyboarding, scripting and editing for video production
Knowledge of multimedia authoring software and project management methodologies and tools
Knowledge of presentation and screen capture tools as well as content delivery methods such as green screening, branch navigation, applications of VR/AR in eLearning, infographics, simulations, and interactive videos
Ability to research new technology tools beneficial to promoting engaged learning and teaching
Ability to collect data, analyze data, create reports, and prepare written communication with an attention to detail and accuracy
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with a varied constituency including project sponsors, administration, management, faculty, staff, students, and industry representatives
Strong attention to detail and highly organized
Knowledge of and proficiency in the use of MS Office Suite software including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint for corresponding, analysis, information storage, and presentation
Knowledge of graphic design software is a plus, or at least a track-record of conveying ideas to graphic designers for creation
Must possess strong leadership and interpersonal skills, and emotional intelligence as demonstrated by a personal style which facilitates collaborative relationships while effectively managing projects
Must be comfortable working in a matrixed environment, but with clear lines of accountability and responsibility
Must be highly motivated, productive, and results-oriented
Strong spreadsheet and data visualization skills with competency inthe use of SmartSheet/project management software
Be willing to roll up sleeves, thrive in a start-up culture, and willing to pitch in as needed
Must want to make a difference and be mission-oriented
Level of Independent Decision Making:
Very High. This position meets with internal and external leadership to define project requirements, update project progress, identify needs and resources and makes follow-up plans independently. This position works collaboratively with all members of the organization and specifically with the Workforce Development team in decision-making tasks, including project scope and delivery.
