ITS promotes two areas for skill growth:
1. Developing generalizing specialists by focusing on technical depth and breadth
The Network Engineer provides support to maintain and enhance the information technology needs of the School of Engineering. The computing facility spans across several buildings on campus and includes some off campus sites as well.
The Network Engineer participates in planning, development, maintenance and documentation of the School's computing and Information Technology (IT) resources, including its research and administrative computing environments. The incumbent is expected to stay technically current, pursue training as needed, and ensure the Baskin School of Engineering (BSoE) computing facility remains up-to- date with the latest technology.
As a member of the computing team, the incumbent may be responsible for coordinating projects that investigate new technologies of use for the school.
This person in this position applies skills as a seasoned, experienced communications professional with a full understanding of industry practices and relevant policies and procedures. You will resolve a wide range of complex issues and must demonstrate competency in selecting methods and techniques to obtain solutions.
Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule Starting Salary Range: $81,297-$103,941/yr. Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience

Job Duties 70% - Network Engineering and Administration
This position is primary technical lead responsible for installation, configuration and maintenance of the School's heterogeneous wired computer network infrastructure. Incumbent will resolve technical problems with network hardware and software.
Configure Cisco and Ruckus network routers and switches;
Develop and implement network security policies;
Plan, specify, obtain and configure network equipment and architecture which may include virtual local area networks (VLANS) and subnets;
Liaise with the vendors;
Coordinate with campus networking group(s);
Resolve network problems with wiring, hardware, or software.
Incumbent will also coordinate with campus and local security administrators to ensure a secure environment and with UNIX and Windows administrators consisting of faculty, staff, and graduate students to insure host connectivity and security.
15% - Network infrastructure Planning
Assist in planning activities and committees that relate to the development and deployment of network technology in support of the School of Engineering and in the university's mission of instruction, research and public service.
Attend meetings and coordinate with campus networking organizations to ensure proper interfaces and requirements for School of Engineering.
15% - Special Projects
As assigned by the Computing Director, work on special projects, such as piloting and evaluating new technologies.
Assist in the development of service level agreements for network services to faculty and staff.
Assist in promoting and developing best practices in network administration.
0% - ITS Security Statement
Information Technology positions are responsible for the security of UC Institutional Information and IT Resources. The incumbent is required to follow all applicable information security policies, procedures, and standards to maintain minimum standards of information security for data, systems and applications. Supervisors are responsible for making sure their staff have appropriate security skills and qualifications, and complete all appropriate and required security training.
Extensive knowledge and experience working with Hewlett Packard and Cisco routers, switches and networking hardware. Specific knowledge on the programming of network switches.
Knowledge and experience specifying, setting up, configuring and securing IEEE 802.11 wireless networking equipment to include wireless access points, bridges, base stations and adapters, principally those from Cisco.
Ability to install network patches and to setup, configure and maintain hubs, switches, routers, bridges. Including but not limited to configuring access lists and virtual lans (VLANs), configuring switches for MAC address port locking, configuring trunk and channel ports where multiple VLANs and links are in use.
Ability to trace remote hosts using MAC addresses and switch ARP and CAM tables.
Knowledge and ability to fabricate networking cables including standard CATSE l00BaseT ethernet cables and networking crossover cables for IOOMB and IGB networking.
Possess good organizational skills and work habits sufficient to work on multiple open-ended projects concurrently, with guidance from mentors and technical leads.
Excellent written and oral communication skills, including ability to communicate technical concepts and operation to non-technical personnel.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team providing high quality, customer-focused services to faculty, staff and students.
Ability to independently anticipate and analyze situations, define problems and objectives, recognize viable alternatives and formulate solutions.
Ability to independently learn and absorb new technical and procedural information from a wide variety of sources, much of which is done independently without formal training.
Ability to disseminate technical and procedural information to end-users of varying computing skills by web and training courses.
Patience, tenacity, resolve and ability to work with a diverse faculty, student and staff population of widely varying cultures, backgrounds and technical skills; from computing experts to the absolute non-technical users.
