To perform a variety of routine and specialized Extension and research duties in the field and laboratory requiring considerable knowledge of the principles and theories of applied sciences, laboratory techniques, and methods for obtaining data. Employees perform work independently within established methods and procedures.
This position will be administratively housed at the Coastal Research and Extension Center in Biloxi, MS, but the primary duty station will be in Mobile, AL.
Area of Specialization:
Marine debris and land-based litter outreach
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Assist with the development and testing of trash abatement plans and associated litter-capturing techniques. Collect field samples such as marine debris, land-based trash, plants, animals, soils, water, etc., and prepare for laboratory analysis. Order and maintain supplies and materials. Gather, compile, and summarize data. Set up tables and graphs and assist in statistical analysis. Write Extension and journal publications. Manage project budgets. Perform literature searches. May use computer to maintain data and prepare reports. Assist in preparing materials for teaching purposes. Perform related duties as assigned.
High school diploma.
Extension, outreach, education, grant writing, and project management experience. Familiarity with marine debris or land-based litter research and outreach.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge and skills in using Microsoft Office Suites especially Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
Working Conditions and Physical Effort
1. Ability to work in extreme weather conditions. 2. Requires heavy physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required of objects up to 50 pounds.
