Windows Systems Administrator (PT3) - Information Technology Services 15388
The Department of Information Technology Services at West Virginia University is seeking applications for a Windows System Administrator. This position will be part of the Enterprise Infrastructure Systems Engineering team and is responsible for the installation, operational support, and maintenance of Windows systems, software, and associated infrastructure. Proven experience in system automation and cloud technologies is essential.
In order to be successful in this position, the ideal candidate will:
Operating System Support : Independently and/or part of a team provide perform the installation, operation/support and maintenance of Windows systems, software, and associated infrastructure. This includes monitoring of system logs, conducting independent analysis of performance issues, system failures and other events impacting operational stability. Generation of reports, postmortems, and root cause analyses are required as needed.
Active Directory : This position will serve as the team expert to provide support typically associated with the role of a Domain Administrator. This includes managing the schema and directory infrastructure, DNS, certificates, security, trust relationships, monitoring and alerting, domain controller maintenance, policy monitoring and compliance, managing group policies, etc.
Security : As part of a team, this position is responsible for the security of infrastructure. This includes the monitoring of vulnerabilities, the installation and maintenance of virus protection software, responding to and notifying management of problems detected. Review documentation, test and install updates. Responsible for installation, upgrade, configuration, security, monitoring and tuning of servers. Work directly with vendor technical support to resolve issues whenever appropriate. Assist in the development of support documentation.
Automation : Collaboration on the development of well written, tested, and documented systems automation tools and custom internal utilities is required. Use of common and well supported tools and programming languages is expected. Version control use is assumed. This will be done under the guidance of senior administrators and management. Advance shell scripts, PowerShell, Ansible, GIT and CI/CD pipelines are common in our environment.
Server Virtualization and Cloud : An understanding and familiarity of server virtualization and cloud technologies is required. This position will provide support in meeting WVU's goals of migrating operations to cloud infrastructure. This will be done under the guidance of the Cloud and Virtualization team and Infrastructure Architect. Typical tasks include migrating physical systems to virtual, migration of on premises systems to cloud, monitoring resource consumption to ensure proper sizing, etc.
Day to Day Operations : Work with team members to monitor ticket queues to ensure smooth operation of WVU systems. Typical duties include patching, anti-virus, file system maintenance, port requests, file share management, user and group management, etc. In addition, this position provides technical support for applications hosted by ITS. The incumbent will work with other ITS staff, WVU departments and/or vendors for application installation and support. Review/write documentation, identify requirements, install software, apply patches/updates, and resolve problems.
Projects : This position will provide technical leadership on projects. These projects include efforts from the ITS Project Management office as well as operational projects sponsored by the team. Tasks include developing project documentation, planning, and technical duties. It is assumed that this position can act independently while keeping management informed of project status and issues that may arise.
Research : Research, test, and recommend new technologies, as part of a team, for implementation and maintain documentation on ongoing activities. Assist other WVU team members in related projects. Maintain general competence in technologies by working with vendor's technical support staff, reading trade journals, and attending seminars. Keep up to date with new technology by utilizing internet sources, manuals, training, networking with peers, and any other means available. As events arise and/or technology needs evolve, it will be necessary for the incumbent to become involved in, develop or initiate special projects, special assignments or special tasks, as deemed appropriate by the supervisor.
On Call Rotation : Participate in an on-call rotation to deliver support to end users, address operational issues, coordinate vendor support, and internal escalation of events. Coordination of outage or disaster response is required as needed. This rotation requires availability after hours, weekends, and holidays.
Bachelor's Degree in a related field or a n equivalent combination of higher education, work experience in related areas, and/or applicable certifications, in any combination, may be substituted in lieu of the degree requirement.
Four (4) years of experience in support of current versions of Windows Server operating systems.
Self-motivated and self-directed while demonstrating the ability to prioritize competing tasks/projects.
Strong desire to learn, assess, apply whether about technology, people, processes, academia landscape, etc. Good written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to work independently with little supervision or as a member of a project team.
Ability to develop effective working relationships with peers and other University organizations and vendors on local, regional, and national levels.
Good organization skills.
Ability to influence and execute despite conflict and complexity.
Proven experience with Windows Server operating systems , managing, or troubleshooting systems of scale (cloud, virtualization, distributed networks, colocation.)
Experience in Networking (e.g. Deploying and troubleshooting LAN, VPN, Firewalls, TCP/IP etc.)
Technical problem investigation, complex analysis, and finding/implementing solutions in a timely manner.
Ability to master and use VMware, AWS, and Azure technologies.
Understands and implements best practices surrounding system design and business process documentation.
Develop/Maintain advanced level knowledge of Windows based technologies both industry-wide as well as those used within WVU and ITS. Supplement with knowledge/experience from other non-Windows based technologies to round out overall knowledge and increase confidence in any chosen technical solution.
Proven experience with Microsoft Active Directory.
Proven experience with converting manual process into automated tasks.
Knowledge of server virtualization and cloud.
Knowledge of DevOps and SRE methodology.
Demonstrated ability to work and communicate in challenging situations.
Broad knowledge of computer security issues, requirements and trends, including an awareness of information security laws (such as HIPAA, FERPA, NIST 800-171) and accepted industry practice.
Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate (MCSA) or the ability to obtain one these certifications within the first year of employment.
