Serves as a representative, advisor, and consultant to the principal investigator(s) and support personnel. The Senior Electrical Engineer will apply advanced engineering theory into practice to resolve highly complex design problems within the Center for Energy Research (CER) on major international multi-funded experimental research programs in plasma physics and fusion energy research.
Responsible for managing all facets of electrical engineering activities, including providing the full complement of electrical and electronics technical expertise to research scientists, technical staff, students, as well as external research collaborators engaged in CER. Responsible for demonstrating good judgment and methods for the successful planning, design, development, procurement, manufacturing, fabrication, testing, calibration and effective integration of scientific systems at internationally recognized experimental facilities at UC San Diego, General Atomics DIII-D National Fusion Facility, and École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (Switzerland).
The incumbent is responsible for system effectiveness, design, performance, and reliability required to meet the experimental research goals and objectives. The Senior Electrical Engineer will be responsible and expected to effectively troubleshoot, repair, maintain, and test large scale systems deployed at the various facilities. Represents the group at design reviews, meetings, or conferences involving electrical engineering work. Performs other related duties as required.

Advanced knowledge associated with the planning, development, and fabrication of engineering systems. Extensive experience in product design and development of custom analog and digital electronics used in a variety of applications from diagnostics to control systems.
Strong and proven experience in electronic device fabrication and manufacturing in designing circuits using Microcontrollers such as Microchip PIC microcontrollers.
Advanced knowledge of specialized design work as well as the overall field. Advanced Degree in Electrical Engineering; and/or equivalent experience/training, with extensive experience in analog and digital electronics, high power electronics, and controls system engineering.
Strong creativity and problem solving abilities to apply principles, practices and procedures within discipline to complete difficult assignments. Skill in analyzing, troubleshooting, implementing or recommending solutions in solving complex electrical/electronics problems typically encountered in experimental facilities.
Strong project management skills needed to assume responsibility for accomplishment of research objectives. Strong experience with engineering project management.
Advanced communication skills, both written and verbal, to convey complex information in a clear and concise manner.
Advanced presentation skills. Excellent interpersonal skills in effectively and collaboratively working and communicating with a diverse group of professional staff such as academic researchers, faculty, engineers, technicians, as well as students and vendors.
Experience in managing projects by working closely with technical support staff and communicating effectively with staff, faculty, academic researchers and students. Ability to work in a highly collaborative manner; readily assess complex challenges and barriers and recommend effective resolutions.
Demonstrated experience in using electronic computer aided design (ECAD) software for design and analysis of electronics such as PSPICE, MathCAD, and LabView.
Extensive experience working with high voltage/current electrical systems.
Strong experience with ECAD circuit board layouts such as ORCAD Layout or PCB Editor.
In-depth experience with programmable logic controllers (PLC), ladder logic, and related graphical user interface software such as Maple Systems, Wonderware Intouch, GE Fanuc VersaPro, and Logic Developer software.
