Under the general direction of the Vice President for Information Technology and Chief Information Officer, provides executive, technical and operational leadership of Information Technology Services (ITS) High Performance Computing. The Director is responsible for creating, developing and implementing strategies and policies related the strategic planning, maintenance, and support of all High Performance Computing functions within the entire IT organization; this includes but is not limited to maintenance and support of HPC software; hardware platforms; storage system(s); HPC network; accounts; system monitoring and end user support.
For activities related to the above responsibilities, the Director interacts and coordinates with University administration, campus and department technology directors, computing advisory groups, University and external technology specialists, and individual members of the University community. The Director serves as advisor to the CIO and other University technology administrators on High Performance Computing and the appropriate operation thereof. The Director coordinates and participates in high-level technology assessment, program planning and reporting for the University of Connecticut and serves on the ITS Leadership team. The Director maintains budget and staffing levels appropriate for activities with responsibility for staff planning, hiring, and assessment. The Director attends conferences and training, and interacts with external peers as required to maintain knowledge of current issues and best practices.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Provides leadership and direction to the University on High Performance Computing issues.
Develops and maintains a long-term strategic plan and assigns goals for High Performance Computing.
Oversees staffing, hiring, training, monitoring and evaluating job performance and discipline for employees and serves as the departmental representative for all union-related issues
Develops and maintains budgets in conjunction with High Performance Computing; provides guidance for contracting and purchasing hardware and software products related to HPC.
Works closely with the team lead(s) to determine appropriate level and quality of services offered.
Acts as liaison to University faculty to ensure their HPC requirements are identified; consults with faculty to keep them apprised of the direction of the University’s HPC; provide end user training.
Works to ensure the highest availability of service offerings including but not limited to:
Maintenance and support of user accounts; allocation of storage for users; system monitoring; job scheduling system configuration; installation of new hardware and OS; installation of new software; maintenance of license configuration; monitor and ensure availability of scratch storage; monitor system performance; system troubleshooting; respond to HPC help tickets.
Prepares periodic reports on the status of projects, operating budgets and other activities and initiatives.
Provides oversight for the overall architecture of ITS’ High Performance Computing.
Interacts with ITS senior leadership team, the IT planning committee and IT leaders working group to ensure coordination of consistent application of policies and standards across all technology projects, systems and services.
Performs other duties as required.
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution;
Minimum of ten (10) years of progressively responsible experience in high-level technology computing or related technology area;
Minimum of five (5) years of higher education experience in a research-intensive university.
Experience designing and supporting High Performance Computing;
Experience with best practices in High Performance Computing, and government regulation for compliance;
Experience with major computing centers;
Excellent and demonstrated project management skills, from project initiation through completion, including budget and timeline expectations and responsibilities;
Strong personnel supervision skills, including employee performance/evaluation, training and mentoring, communication and setting direction, and building effective work teams;
Demonstrated ability to act decisively and solve problems through creative and strategic thinking;
Ability to identify key issues in complex situations, evaluate options and initiate strategies for resolution;
Ability to translate long-term strategies into day-to-day operations with demonstrated experience in aligning resources with goals;
Proven leader with strong management and communication skills who is comfortable and effective with diverse university audiences;
Ability to build effective operational teams that emphasize teamwork, partnership and collaboration;
Excellent interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to develop and maintain constructive and professional relationships with a wide variety of individuals are required.
Advanced degree from an accredited institution.
