The Senior Specialist, Issues Management is part of the Strategic Communications team within the Division of Communications at Vanderbilt University and is a key individual contributor responsible for developing and implementing external communications plans and tactics that enhance and protect Vanderbilt University's reputation and advance the university's mission as a premier academic research institution. Reporting directly to the Director of Issues Management, the Senior Specialist will create and implement communications plans, develop messaging and write stories and to advance the university's public affairs initiatives and support crisis and issues management strategies.
The Strategic Communications team within the Division of Communications designs and executes integrated communications strategies to protect and enhance Vanderbilt's local, national and international reputation, and positions the university as one of the world's leading academic research institutions through the distribution of compelling content across a variety of digital and traditional channels.
Duties and Responsibilities
Work closely with the Government and Community Relations, and with partners across the Division of Communications, to support proactive and reactive communications efforts that advance the university's legislative agenda, and respond to policy developments with potential impact for the university.
Assist with coordination of communications efforts on sensitive issues across the division and the institution.
Support the Director of Issues Management in developing crisis and issues management communications plans and strategies, including tactics, messaging, talking points and other key internal and external content. Assist with implementing and guiding appropriate response strategies during emerging, developing or active crisis periods. Demonstrate fluency with social media and web content.
Coordinate with the Director of Issues Management to write, implement and structure the crisis and issues management plan and process, and coordinates accordingly with campus partners.
Assist with development of crisis and issues management content to inform target internal audiences, including students, faculty and staff.
Demonstrate excellent news judgment and an excellent sense of what is appropriate for the brand
Help coordinate crisis and issues management training for faculty and staff as needed.
Provide crisis and issues management monitoring and analysis, including through social media channels.
Work independently to design and execute on communications priorities.
Provide overall support as needed and assigned for department priorities.
Demonstrate understanding of the university's mission, values, goals and priorities and an ability to ensure that all are considered in developing communications strategies.
Communicate and collaborate effectively with a wide range of audiences--including faculty, students, leadership, staff, alumni, suppliers and agencies.
Efficiently and effectively manage multiple, complex and results-oriented projects with quick turn-around requirements.
Adhere to confidentiality and business ethics; demonstrate outstanding judgment and discretion.
Work outside regular business hours as needed in order to perform job responsibilities, including being officially on-call.
Perform other relevant duties as assigned.
