At the SEI Emerging Technology Center (ETC), we describe our work as "making the recently possible mission-practical." We help our government customers stay on the leading edge of new technology by identifying, demonstrating, extending, and applying emerging software technologies to solve real government problems.
As the center of AI Engineering expertise within the SEI, the ETC is leading the SEI's movement to mature the discipline of AI Engineering for Defense and National Security. As our government customers adopt AI and machine learning to provide leap-ahead mission capabilities, we are working to provide the processes, practices, and tools to support operationalizing AI for robust and trustworthy mission capabilities.
Our work includes scalable AI and ML; the tailoring of modern software practices for AI-enabled systems; architectures, design patterns, modeling, and representations; building tools and processes for trustworthy development of AI-enabled capabilities; and test, evaluation, verification, and validation of AI systems. Of course, building and maturing the discipline of AI Engineering also requires building real-world, mission-scale AI capabilities through solving practical engineering problems and learning from those experiences.
We also work in emerging technologies such as human-machine teaming and advanced computing--areas that are changing and progressing rapidly. As we show our customers how new technologies can improve their mission capabilities through rapid prototyping and iterative development, we both rely on and shape academic and industrial research.

As the SEI ETC Digital Transformation Lead, you will lead a portfolio of work helping organizations to co-evolve their mission and technologies. You will work with customers on technology and innovation initiatives, develop and advance the practice of digital transformation, and work with project teams to improve technology development and adoption for mission.
BS in Computer Science or related discipline with ten (10) years of experience; OR MS in the same fields with eight (8) years of experience; OR PhD with five (5) years of experience.
Flexible to travel to Pittsburgh and Washington, D.C., sponsor sites, conferences, and other meetings. Moderate (20-40%) travel outside of your home location.
You will be subject to a background investigation and must be eligible to obtain and maintain a Department of Defense security clearance.

You have led organizational and technology transformation initiatives. You have demonstrated technical contributions in areas related to innovation and emerging technologies. You have published your work across multiple fields.
Awareness and Engagement: You regularly scan and maintain awareness of technology trends and opportunities. You are familiar with technical challenges and emerging trends in computing and information science, and you are aware of opportunities in government and industry. You regularly speak and teach on the topic of digital transformation.
Government Knowledge and Experience: You have worked with a diversity of organizations across the Department of Defense (DoD). You are familiar with government organizations outside of, but complementary to, the DoD. You have experience and knowledge of the challenges of technology adoption and innovation in government and have had success helping government organizations with digital transformation.
Digital Transformation Leadership: You will develop, oversee, and lead a portfolio of work in helping customers develop, adopt, and adapt to emerging technologies. You will leverage and create novel methods and practices to create organizational transformation through technology adoption and evolution.
Strategy: You will lead the Center's process to plan, develop, and carry out an overall digital transformation approach and portfolio of work, and influence customer engagement across a variety of technology and mission areas.
Contributions to Engineering Disciplines: Your work in digital transformation will be instrumental in shaping and contributing to engineering disciplines associated with emerging technology. In particular, your work will contribute to the development and advancement of an AI Engineering discipline to promote the reliable adoption and use of AI technologies.
Customer and Innovation Community Engagement: You will engage with customers and stakeholders. You will represent the Center's digital transformation approach and portfolio, regularly presenting our work at collaboration venues and to customers. You will build and maintain relationships with the DoD innovation ecosystem, including relevant research and technology communities.
Collaboration: You will actively participate on teams of software developers, researchers, designers, product managers, and technical leads. You will collaborate with other researchers, technologists, and our government customers to understand challenges, needs, and possible solutions. You will contribute to improving the overall customer and user engagement approach of the Center by mentoring and teaching others, participating in design and innovation sessions, and sharing insights and wisdom across the SEI and CMU.
