The Communications Strategy Director is a member of the Strategic Communications management team within the Division of Communications at Vanderbilt University. The Director leads the division’s work to project manage the division’s executive communications efforts and projects with key campus partners to enhance Vanderbilt University’s reputation and advance the university’s mission as a premier academic research institution. This position oversees the development and deployment of innovative and holistic communications plans and tactics in support of the Division of Communications’ strategic goals and priorties. Reporting directly to the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Strategic Communications, the Communications Strategy Director will proactively build relationships with university leadership, faculty and staff and will collaborate with peers throughout the Division of Communications.
The Strategic Communications team within the Division of Communications designs and executes integrated communications strategies to protect and enhance Vanderbilt’s local, national and international reputation, and positions the university as one of the world’s leading academic research institutions through the distribution of compelling content across a variety of digital and traditional channels.
Duties and Responsibilities
Manage a team of communications strategists that serve as focal points for planning, implementing deadlines, and tracking execution on priority projects, including major university announcements, events, campus partner initiatives and more.
Lead the development and implementation of communications plans and strategies for division-wide projects in support of the Division of Communications’ priorities and overall content strategy.
Implement the executive communications strategy in coordination with Division of Communications leadership, the Office of the Chancellor and the Office of the Provost.
Oversee and coordinate the gathering of compelling story packages from across the university that support the division’s messaging framework.
Project manage story packages and deliverables to ensure communications efforts are coordinated and there is consistent cross-channel messaging across the division.
Develop and reinforce the process through which each strategy is defined as a project with explicit scope, deliverables, milestones, drivers, stakeholders and subject matter experts.
Partner with other unit leaders across the division on story development, production, and distribution.
Oversee communications support for specific schools, colleges, departments or centers of the university.
Build and maintain relationships with staff, faculty and administrators to identify compelling stories and other opportunities to join the national conversation; advises deans, directors, faculty, staff on local and national external communications opportunities for their programs and research.
Coordinate with the Director of Editorial Strategy to plan and maintain the divisional editorial calendar.
Create and disseminate performance metrics and outcomes measurements for projects.
Demonstrate fluency with social media and project management best practices.
Provide overall support as needed and assigned for department priorities.
Demonstrate understanding of the university’s mission, values, goals and priorities and an ability to ensure that all are considered in developing communications strategies.
Communicate and collaborate effectively with a wide range of audiences—including faculty, students, leadership, staff, alumni, suppliers and agencies.
Efficiently and effectively manage multiple, complex and results-oriented projects with quick turn-around requirements.
Adhere to confidentiality and business ethics; demonstrate outstanding judgment and discretion.
Perform other relevant duties as assigned.

A bachelor’s degree is necessary.
A degree in communications, journalism or a related field is preferred.
At least 10 years of experience in communications, public affairs, journalism or related field, including managing others, is necessary.
At least 5 years communications planning and strategy experience is strongly preferred.
Experience with or certification in project management best practices is preferred.
