You'll join the Integrated Risk and Intelligence Service (IRIS), which is a collaboration between DWP Digital, Counter Fraud, Compliance and Debt (CFCD) and Cyber Resilience Centre (CRC). IRIS is central to the DWP fraud and error strategy, and is radically transforming how the welfare system and those that use it are protected especially detection of Fraud & Error and identity theft.
As a Data Scientist at DWP Digital, You'll work as part of a multi-disciplinary team to deliver data science solutions, and act as a proactive link between operational, technical and analytical teams. You will also be motivated to discover patterns in data and embed that insight in products that enable innovative ways to prevent and detect fraud and error, using techniques such as machine learning, natural language processing and network analytics.
You'll help us to convert raw data complex unstructured data into insights and recommendations so that DWP can shape real change to products and services used by millions and ultimately optimise digital services. This includes Universal Credit one of our flagship programmes where we will look at data analysis to prevent and detect fraud and error in our benefits system including serious organised crime.

Duties. Work. Projects. You will need be a self-starter with an entrepreneurial spirit who is motivated by using impactful and creative applications of data science to deliver against user needs. The Department as a whole is undergoing a major digital transformation programme and data science is recognised as having a critical role to play; not only in the better design of our services, but also making them more personalised for each individual's circumstances and making big shifts in our effectiveness and efficiency. You'll be responsible for studying user behaviour, strategic initiatives, and new product features to bring data-driven insights and recommendations into every decision we make. Above all, your work will directly impact the way the Universal Credit digital service is designed, developed and delivered.
What are we looking for?
A strong candidate will be able to demonstrate the essential criteria listed below:
* Practical experience of delivering innovative data-driven solutions on large or complex datasets; including gathering and manipulating disparate data, applying analytical techniques and visualising results
* Good experience of a range of core data science techniques (e.g. classification, text similarity and clustering) and associated limitations
* Must have SQL and Python (or similar query-based or high level programming experience) to an intermediate level
* Good written and verbal communication, with the ability to present complex ideas simply to technical and non-technical audiences
* Strong stakeholder management skills and experience working with a range of colleagues to deliver results
* Delivery focused to create working solutions often and iteratively, being comfortable with Agile methodology and working in agile teams

Familiarity with Spark graph analytics and graph data bases
A Maths/ Statistics/Science background
Experience working in a product analytics or insight role, ideally with digital products or services
Capable of tackling challenging problems that are often unknown or very loosely defined, with a passion and curiosity to ask great questions to truly understand what's going on, and experience translating analysis into actionable recommendations

In return for your skills we offer competitive salary up to £50,938 per annum, a brilliant civil service pension, and a generous leave package.
Outside of London the salary for this role is from £35,310 to £40,666. Where the maximum salary is offered a digital allowance up to £10,272 is available. For London the salary for this role is from £39,957 to £45,018. Where the maximum salary is offered a digital allowance up to £5,920 is available.
