Under minimal supervision, the Microbial Ecologist will undertake research projects in collaboration with the academic supervisor. Perform taxonomic identification of marine planktonic taxa collected from underwater imaging platforms and develop machine learning algorithms for identifying images collected by multiple imaging platforms. Perform quality control and correct model output. Collect, interpret, and quality control environmental data from observing stations. Perform project management duties and ensure collaborative interactions. Conduct data analysis and prepare manuscripts for diverse projects on the ecology of marine microbes and phytoplankton in the California Current Ecosystem.
The Microbial Biologist will lead and oversee integration of data collected by multiple underwater imaging systems across multiple PIs in California and act as a critical point of contact between several academic and industry partners to develop standardized products. Plan and organize results from the projects into reports and draft manuscripts as well as presentations at scientific meetings and workshops. Participate in maintenance, calibration, and field deployment of underwater imaging systems in Southern California.
Must be willing and able to travel for fieldwork and build site-specific collaborations.
Demonstrated knowledge of the principles, theory, and background information in marine ecology and oceanography.
Proven knowledge of the ecology of marine microbes and phytoplankton in the California Current Ecosystem.
Advanced knowledge of plankton taxonomy and attributes that differentiate species. Working knowledge of marine plankton (e.g., identifying images).
Demonstrated experience in taxonomic identification of marine planktonic taxa.
Demonstrated knowledge of regional chemical and physical oceanography in the California Current.
Proven knowledge of and demonstrated experience implementing machine learning algorithms.
Proven knowledge of and experience in computer programming and data visualization tools (e.g., Python, R, Matlab, or equivalent).
Demonstrated experience developing and writing manuscripts, including excellent scientific writing and presentation skills for presenting data to a formal audience.
Demonstrated experience with advanced statistical methods and software.
Demonstrated experience with data analysis and data quality control.
Proven ability to conduct thorough background review and meta-analysis of scientific literature.
Proven knowledge of lab safety requirements and procedures, hazardous materials disposal, and skill to train others in these procedures/requirements. Knowledge and understanding of and experience with Safety Data Sheets, hazard communication and Injury and Illness Prevention programs.
Proven experience in project management of research projects. Skill and knowledge to conduct research and provide innovative contributions pertaining to experimental procedures.
Strong organization skills to maintain and share protocols, lab notebooks, and research data.
Demonstrated ability to exercise judgment, initiative, and resourcefulness in making decisions.
Excellent interpersonal and written and verbal communication skills including tact, diplomacy, and flexibility with students, staff, faculty, and visitors of various cultures and backgrounds.
Demonstrated skill to work collaboratively within a dynamic team environment and with remote project partners. Ability to collaborate and build professional relationships with diverse colleagues across multiple institutions.
