General Summary/Purpose: Intensive research and scholarly work on Professor Weaver’s Portals project. Note: This position is not eligible for visa sponsorship. Note: This position is not eligible for benefits. Specific Duties & Responsibilities: Specifically this research assistant will start by working on two ongoing research projects with Professor Weaver: 1. Understanding Black Resistance: - The first project will be an ongoing analysis of the qualitative data collected through the Portals project in race-class subjugated communities. This Portals project has already resulted in journal publications related to thematic findings. The project may also expand specifically to research and uncovering forms of black organizing and resistance occurring in Baltimore City.
- Identify additional themes and concepts from Portals transcripts
- Build new theoretical ideas emergent from the Portals data and write manuscripts.
- Apply new social theoretical lens to understand the Portals data.
2. Portals Book Project: - The second project constitutes contributing to a book project based on Portals data and other archival data sources, which seeks to build a black theory of the state and democracy. This project will look through historical time, starting with slavery and going through the modern era, to excavate common threads of resistance.
Additional duties include the following: - Analyzing Portal transcripts and existing archival research documenting black oral history including in the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture when accessible
- Formulating new research questions that lead to manuscripts including topics related to police and legal extraction of resources from race-class subjugated communities, this may involve researching municipal police finance data, and canvassing the secondary literature
- Assisting in developing an open forum website for the public to engage with Portals data.
Minimum Qualifications (mandatory): - Bachelor's degree in related discipline.
- Some related experience.
- Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
(JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.) Preferred Qualifications: - Master’s (or equivalent) preferred.
Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: - Experience in scientific computing and remote sensing is expected.
- Excellent written and oral skills and the ability to communicate effectively are essential, strong organizational, administrative, project management, and problem solving skills.
- Ability to manage and track large amounts of sensitive and diverse data, ability to balance multitude of ongoing competing deadlines, and the ability to work with independently and with others.
