The primary duty of the Senior Editor is to manage the daily flow of news content. Oversees the production and editing of news stories for daily broadcast and online, and also serves as a news content contributor. The Senior Editor is a professional journalist who ensures adherence to journalistic guidelines and practices and the department's performance using these principles as guidelines. The work involves collaboration with seven Indiana public radio station news departments. The Senior Editor is also charged with the production of a weekly in-depth news show that focuses on balanced, enterprise story telling.
Develops and oversees a half hour weekly newscast that focuses on in-depth reporting. Ensures meaningful content is delivered to the audience by coordinating with journalists, senior staff and production team members. Establishes schedules for content delivery, communicates expectations to journalists and crew members, and ensures all content meets the highest journalistic standards.
The Senior Editor produces news coverage for a large portion of Indiana and contributes stories locally, regionally and nationally. Under the editor's guidance, the station provides coverage of breaking news and explanatory pieces. Produces and edits news stories for daily broadcast and posting online; develops feature-length material regularly to run across all platforms and across the state and country. For example, the Editor might pitch a story idea about a Ryan White oral history project that's premiere is set to coincide with the anniversary of White's death. The Editor will research the subject, identify sources to interview, formulate questions, conduct interviews, and write stories for radio, TV and online. The story will be distributed statewide to be aired on radio stations. The Editor will also work with a national editor at NPR to rework the story for a national audience.
The Senior Editor manages daily newsroom assignments. Key activities include: evaluates story pitches based on newsworthiness; assigns crews to stories using appropriate logistical and journalistic judgment; makes calls to news sources as needed, gaining appropriate and actionable information; assists in finding stories, doing research and tracking story ideas. Coordinates logistics, monitors news wires and other news sources. Serves as a gatekeeper and evaluates content and determines whether a story is more than a daily assignment that could be a special feature or talk show topic. Helps journalists develop pitches for the News Bureau Chief to consider.
Supervises intern reporters and student reporters. The Senior News Editor is part of the WFIU/WTIU News Bureau team that identifies, trains, supervises, and evaluates WFIU/WTIU, part-time and student staff. This position has specific oversight for training and editing students who serve as reporters in the newsroom. This work is performed in conjunction with IU's Media School, as well as other departments which have students interested in journalism or broadcasting. In technical areas, the Senior Editor instructs in the use of audio, video and Internet material, proper public broadcasting journalistic practices, reporting, production, and sometimes on-air presentation.
Bachelor's degree in journalism, telecommunication, or a related field and two years of experience in public broadcasting or a journalism-related endeavor.
Possess a valid driver's license with the ability to be insured by Indiana University.
In-depth understanding of journalistic principles, particularly as they apply to public media. Hands-on experience in writing, reporting, editing, production, and on-air delivery for radio, TV, and on-line. Experience working with multi-platform technologies and the ability to adapt material to a variety of platforms. Ability and judgment to produce a large quantity of work to deadline that matches the quality of NPR and PBS productions. Knowledge and understanding of journalism ethics. Ability to work occasional nights, weekends, holiday, and special events (hours of work vary according to need).
One year of editing experience.
Working Conditions / Demands
Must be able to travel to accomplish deadline requirements. Must be able to handle and carry 30 pounds of audio/video equipment.
Equipment utilized: audio and video recorders, digital field equipment, on-air broadcast consoles, digital download boards, computer interfaces, news multi-platform and digital editing software.
