Essential Job Duties:
The Geospatial Analytics and Decision Management (GADA) group at ITRE strives to help improve the effectiveness and efficiency of traffic safety planning statewide through data-driven analytics, research, and education.
The primary purpose of this position is to provide data-driven traffic safety planning, research assistance, and analysis to our sponsored program clients (the North Carolina Highway Patrol and the Governor's Highway Safety Program). The candidate will design and develop data visualization products for analyzing traffic crash and enforcement data to help improve traffic safety planning and enforcement effectiveness.
Day-to-day activities include designing and developing web-based visual analytics tools that provide insightful and actionable content for improving traffic safety planning. The applicant should have the technical skills necessary to collect user goals, articulate design intentions, translate findings to user flows and UI specifications, and develop data visualization products. The applicant should be able to effectively communicate visualization products to a variety of audiences, both verbally and with digital presentation tools.
Some overnight travel (10%) is required with expenses reimbursed.

Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree, or relevant Bachelor’s degree plus 3 or more years of independent research experience. May require terminal degree and licensure.
Solid communication skills for effectively working with clients and peers
Basic knowledge of UI / UX (User Interface / User Experience) design
Data visualization design experience
Basic understanding of web technologies
Experience with Excel
Basic knowledge of Tableau
Ability to learn and communicate institutional knowledge to non-technical audiences
Self-starter, inquisitive, resourceful, motivated, creative and exhibits enthusiasm to learn and grow professionally
Ability to adapt to changing conditions, learn new technologies and apply to work
Excellent communication and presentation skills necessary for client interaction
Applied experience with UI / UX design principles
Experience designing and developing data visualizations and analytics dashboards, static and interactive visualizations, from simple graphics to complex stories, based on data visualization best practices
Experience with Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, Sketch, or related software)
Experience with wireframes, mockups, and rapid prototyping
Good overall understanding of web technologies
Good understanding of web standards, cross-browser compatibility, and CSS-based design
Experience with HTML/CSS, PHP, or other web languages
Experience with web services (REST, SOAP, XML, etc.)
Working knowledge of Excel
Experience with Tableau or related data visualization software
Basic understanding of GIS (ESRI / ArcGIS or related technologies)
Required license or certification:
A valid NC Driver’s license or the ability to obtain one within 60 days of employment.
