Essential Job Duties:
This position provides technical assistance to the Radiation Oncology Department in the Randall B Terry Companion Animal Medical Center (TC). The individual will act as the Radiation Therapist diagnostic technician for the department, providing unique internal customer service, technical assistance, data collection, and patient care. The position interacts with internal services and their respective staff, clinicians, and students as well as referring veterinarians (rDVM) through e-mail and phone communications. The position is the primary point of contact for the patient treatments and delivery of radiation therapy through the use of a Linear Acceleration (LINAC).
Primary duties of the Radiation Therapy Technician include, but are not limited to the following:
Serving as the primary contact for scheduling procedures, for diagnostic testing and communicating with students, staff, and clinicians to receive the most up to date information regarding presenting problem, diagnostics being performed, as well as projected plan of care for the animal.
Performing various technical procedures including; venipuncture, IV injections, IV catheter placement, drug administration (IV, Oral, Subcutaneous), patient positioning for radiation therapy, radiation therapy set up on the Diagnostic Imaging CT, digital image capturing on the onboard LINAC CT, assisting anesthesia technicians, and various other routine and specialized diagnostic testing.
Managing billing for individual patients receiving diagnostic services along with scheduling of LINAC cases.
Providing excellent patient care by applying full knowledge of anatomy, physiology, disease processes, pharmacology, specialized equipment usage, and specialized drug administration.
Applying considerable knowledge of the principles of preparing and delivery of prescribed courses of radiation therapy to patients.
Supervising, coaching, teaching, orienting, and evaluating in the principles of Radiation Therapy for all senior veterinary students as well as post-doctoral interns and residents.
Recording a variety of data relating to patient care, Radiographic diagnostics performed, and client communications.
Providing quick and accurate information regarding each patient, acting as the liaison between service clinicians and Radiologists.
Entering data into electronic medical record.
Maintaining a clean working environment to ensure Infectious Disease standards are followed and infection is not spread.
Handling all medical/biological and infectious waste appropriately. Follows all radiation safety, OSHA, and Environmental Health and Safety standards.
Keeping all necessary equipment in clean and working order and has all necessary and appropriate stocked supplies available for procedures and daily patient husbandry. Responsible for maintaining and calibrating equipment as well as all quality control.
Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
High school diploma or equivalency and two years of experience in medical diagnostics; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Some positions may require additional training, certifications, or licenses.
Ability to work with or around sick animals, potentially hazardous materials, cleaning chemicals, gas anesthetics, zoonotic diseases, and unpleasant odors.
Ability to communicate professionally and effectively at all times and maintain professionalism in emotionally charged / challenging situations.
Ability to provide high quality customer service.
Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodations.
Ability to work beyond scheduled work hours when needed.
Ability to work effectively as a member of a team and be an active participant in problem-solving and team advancement.
Ability to work effectively with computers and electronics.
Ability to work independently and practice good judgment to ensure high-quality care for all patients and request assistance when needed.
Desire to teach 4th-year veterinary students.
At least 3 years of previous veterinary technician experience or human radiation clinical experience.
Knowledge of administering anesthesia.
Registered in NC as required by law to administer anesthesia.
Graduation from an AVMA fully accredited two- or four-year Veterinary Technician program.
Required license or certification:
Registered/Licensed/Certified Veterinary Technician or Radiology Technician with radiation therapy experience.
