This senior network engineering position will be responsible for two main roles. The first is developing automation workflows and implementing the use of automation tools for your team's network management tasks. You will contribute to efforts to standardize deployments and network device configurations so they can be template-driven. This position will work closely with the Systems Automation Team and the Monitoring Infrastructure Team to structure network data and introduce the use of automation tools into the day-to-day management of the network while managing risk appropriately. You will be planning an approach, working with the automation team for implementation, testing, providing status updates, and communicating issues or concerns. After automation is widely implemented, this role will continue to look for other ways to automate as we develop new services. This role will also work closely with GlobalNOC colleagues to ensure that their customer network is using the database and other tools to full advantage. This may include auditing the database to ensure information is correct and proper, providing training, and writing SOPs as needed.
The second role is working with other technical staff, management, and customers to understand and address a variety of operational problems in data centers, wireless networks, managed LANs, and remote access VPNs which are connected through a national-scope IP/MPLS network. You will plan and implement customer migrations and new deployments while following change procedures to mitigate customer impact and downtime. You will also help handle network emergencies, troubleshoot connectivity issues, and participate in rotating on-call. This role requires breadth and depth in all network layers, security, network hardware, data center architectures, and customer experience in order to deliver the optimal solution for our customers. This position also requires communicating with multiple teams including Engineering, Service Desk, Systems/Software, and Project Management, as well as our customers' organizations at several levels.
This position provides expert design, configuration, troubleshooting, and maintenance of local and/or wide area networks (LAN and WAN) including routers, witches, firewalls, and application servers. Tests network systems to eliminate problems and make improvements. Evaluates LAN/WAN hardware and software requirements and capabilities related to user needs, and coordinates installation of required hardware and software. Documents standards for network architecture. Often guides less experienced peers, and operates as a technical lead and/or project lead.
Applies expert knowledge to establish and standardize procedures on the design, evaluation, development, and deployment of network system software and hardware technology.
Identifies and resolves the most complex problems, issues, and assignments in providing daily network operational support.
Performs network systems studies which include feasibility, conceptional design, cost/benefit analysis, and implementation planning to support the growth and expansion of GlobalNOC-managed networks; responsible for researching cutting edge technologies, architecture and methodologies to improve network performance and reliability.
Prepares and leads network implementation and upgrade plans and scheduls; provides detailed explanations for purchasing, installing, and housing new and upgraded network systems and components, and follows through to ensure that systems are successfully implemented.
Leads multi-organizational project teams in network system design sessions working with clients to ensure achievement of goals; evaluates service requests, estimates resources, and analyzes design and development solutions.
Works closely with customers, partners, and vendors to ensure timely design and delivery of network systems and services to meet the customer's needs.
Acts as a project lead; provides guidance to junior staff.
This position is posted at a PA4IT level but may be filled at a PA3IT level depending on the candidate's qualifications. Although they will be similar, the duties and responsibilities may differ if filled at the lower rank. Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related discipline and five years of experience in the administration and engineering of complex network environments and various architectures, including work in Layers 1 through 3.

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Telecommunications, Information technology, or a related discipline and two years of work experience in the areas of design, integration, installation, configuration and maintenance of data networks, including experience with several link-layer protocols (Ethernet, SONET, others).

Broad knowledge of networking protocols, specifically relating to routing of packets (OSPF, IS-IS, BGP, PIM, MSDP, MPLS). Working knowledge of other Internet services and applications within the IP suite (TELNET, FTP, NNTP, DNS, SMTP, HTTP). Strong interpersonal skills. Technical writing skills. Ability to effectively communicate and exchange information. Understanding of network standards and protocols. Ability to effectively handle multiple priorities and constantly changing demands.
PA4IT: Supervisory experience. Master's degree.
PA3IT: Experience with Cisco and/or Juniper routers and switches, optical technologies especially WDM and DWDM, programming in Perl or C, basic UNIX system administration, and with the installation and maintenance of networking or other computer hardware. Experience with large scale projects and rollouts.
