| Position Summary: Provide skilled, specialized assistance to SUNY Cortland community (faculty, staff, students) in instructional research and educationally related programs or projects including dedicated instructional support to the Geology and Physics departments; with emphasis on introductory laboratories in Geology plus the meteorite lab for Physics. Major Responsibilities: Support the Geology and Physics departments:
oContact all laboratory instructors prior to each semester to ascertain their anticipated needs.
oOrder supplies for laboratory classes, as well as for audiovisual programs, demonstrations, and experiments as requested by instructors.
oOrganize laboratory materials, in consultation with department chairs and/or instructors.
oEnsure materials and equipment for assigned courses and the meteorite lab are ready at lab time, and communicate that to the instructors.
oEnsure materials and equipment are complete and/or functional when stored.
oSupport faculty as needed with preparation, set-up, and breakdown of equipment and materials in other laboratory classes.
oSupport faculty as needed by driving a van for field trips.
oMay design and/or construct models and displays.
oMay arrange lecture or laboratory demonstrations for upper level geology and/or physics courses. Equipment Control Officer for both departments:
oMaintain familiarity with the equipment needs of both departments.
oMaintain an inventory of departmental equipment as required by Property Control.
oProvide routine maintenance, trouble-shooting, and out-sourcing of repairs as appropriate for laboratory and research equipment.
oAcquire new equipment and decommission obsolete equipment.
oMaintain a file (digital and/or hard-copy) of manuals for equipment. Safety Officer for both departments:
oMaintain compliance with material safety, radioactive sources, and compressed gases
oEnsure that careful, precise, and complete instructions are given to all who operate departmental equipment, with attention to electrical, mechanical, chemical, radiation, optical, auditory, and respiratory hazards. Maintain an adequate stock of consumable supplies:
oIdentify faculty needs; search catalogs, literature, and web sites to ascertain specifications and potential vendors; and obtain quotes and other information necessary for purchases.
oReport purchases made with the procurement card and purchase orders each month to the department secretary and to the Business Office as appropriate. Coordinator for the Natural Sciences vans:
oContact all instructors in the Natural Sciences who are likely to be using vans prior to each semester to ascertain their anticipated needs, and providing them with the appropriate paperwork.
oCoordinate all scheduling of the vans, and ensuring that instructors receive the keys and necessary paperwork in a timely manner.
oKeep four complete clipboard sets (clipboard + pen + blank mileage slip) with the keys and ready-to-go each day, and provide keys and paperwork to drivers in the morning of the day before each trip whenever possible.
oConduct or delegate and ensure completion of weekly inspection of all four vans to ensure cleanliness (interior and windows), adequate fuel, adequate tire pressure, and necessary tools and documents (e.g., snow brush, ice scrapper, fuel cards, etc.).
oCoordinate with Motor Pool for scheduled maintenance and cleaning, collecting and forwarding mileage slips to the Business Office, reporting van usage for the Geology Department to the department chair and secretary on a monthly basis, and completing damage assessments and accident reports on occasion as needed by the College. Maintain the planetarium:
oAssist faculty and students with designing and presenting shows for classes and the general public.
oRecordkeeping for service contracts and software upgrades
oAssist in the smooth operation of the system
oContact necessary personnel for further maintenance when appropriate. Student Employee Supervision:
oTrain, schedule, and supervise (including laboratory safety training) work-study and temporary service student assistants (normally 1 to 3 students annually) for the Geology Department, including monitoring and ensuring submission of student timesheets in the New York State Time and Attendance System (TAS). Maintain major departmental equipment:
oWork closely with faculty to ensure proper maintenance of major departmental equipment (e.g. automated weather station, X-ray diffractometer, scanning electron microscope, ion chromatograph, rock saws, petrographic and binocular microscopes, advanced physics lab equipment, etc.) and arrange servicing as necessary. Maintain computer software and hardware:
oWork closely with faculty to ensure maintenance of computer software and hardware in the departments
oAssist faculty as needed with operation of peripherals (e.g. printers, plotters, cameras, etc.).
oEnsure proper disposal of obsolete equipment
oEnsure proper installation of new equipment in cooperation with Campus Technology Services. Major and long-term projects:
oMaintain a task schedule for major projects
oReport progress on long-term projects regularly to the appropriate department chair. Maintain appropriate storage spaces:
oEnsure that the storage spaces for the departments are kept organized and clear of obsolete equipment and trash.
oWork with the department chairs and other faculty as appropriate to organize storage areas to ensure that the needs of multiple users are accommodated.
oEnsure that the IST office and workroom are kept organized with a clear separation of departmental and personal materials and paperwork. Laboratory sessions:
oWith approval of the department chair and in consultation with the instructor of record; may attend laboratory sessions to ensure smooth operation;
oIST will not participate in the sole instruction of students in these laboratories.
oWith approval of the appropriate department chair; may assist the instructor of record and support the instructional programs of the departments on an ad hoc basis and; as schedule allows. Assist the Coordinator of Field Geology in moving materials and equipment to the Brauer Field Station for the Summer Session Field course. Job Requirements:

With or without reasonable accommodation; able to move around in and out of storage areas, classrooms, planetarium, field station and laboratory rooms, handle laboratory equipment, lift or move up to 25-lbs frequently and occasionally more. Sight and smell are commonly used in laboratory setting.
Operation, routine maintenance and problem diagnosis for teaching and research equipment (e.g. petrographic and binocular microscopes, rock saws, planetarium, physics lab equipment, automated weather station, XRD (x-ray diffractometer), SEM (scanning electron microscope), ion chromatography, etc.).

Valid NY state Driver's License
Successful completion of courses and associated labs in introductory geology and physics.Preferred Qualifications: Master's degree in geology or related geoscience.
