Berkeley Lab's Projects & Infrastructure Modernization Division (PIMD) has an opening for a Project Manager.
In this exciting role, you will be responsible for managing, coordinating, and administration of multiple, complex and competing projects from the conceptual phase through planning, engineering, procurement, construction, start-up, commissioning and close-out. Project size typically ranges from $100k to $10M.
What You Will Do: Lead project teams comprised of Construction Managers, Project Coordinators, Facilities Engineering staff, Architects/Engineers, consultants, and subcontractors to ensure project completion in a safe manner, within budget, schedule, and in accordance with specifications and requirements. Work with customer divisions and departments to obtain all services and project requirements to achieve customer needs. Coordinate client contacts, including major correspondence with the client, and maintain working relationships at all levels throughout the project. Monitor and control contractual commitments to assure that all work is being performed in accordance with the specifications, drawings, and terms of the subcontract. Review and approve project forecasts, schedules, cost estimates, financial reports. Review equipment procurement methods, schedules, and specific plans including expediting suppliers and methods of delivery to ensure compatibility with the overall project schedule and budget. Reconcile commitments that exceed assigned budgets. Initiate and direct the planning and development of the project scope, budget, and overall project schedule. Establish and control the budget for project costs. Review and approve major purchase orders, change orders, and subcontracts. Work with Procurement to select and contract with Architect/Engineering firms for design services. Working with PIMD Construction Managers, manage activities of subcontractors, LBNL in-house staff and vendors performing work, providing services, supplying materials or equipment for the project. Periodically review change order controls to assure that all change orders are current and appropriate. Ensure that all safety requirements are adhered to on all assigned projects. Conduct periodic project/ client meetings and prepare Project Status Reports. Direct the preparation of progress and special reports to the client and Berkeley Lab management. Lead in the preparation of program or project-specific policies and procedures. Resolves project, schedule and priority issues. Obtain customer and DOE approval and sign-off of completed projects. Ensure prompt close-out of the project and submission of the final project report.
Additional Responsibilities as needed: What Is Required: Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Engineering, or professional certification in Construction, Project Management, or a related field or equivalent relevant experience is required. A minimum of 5 years in construction facilities project management. Leading and managing design and construction activities using project management principles and controls. Experience with project management for the design and construction of remodel projects in laboratory research buildings and infrastructure installation and replacement projects for industry, government, or university use. Extensive experience developing and managing budgets and schedules, developing project scope documents, and coordinating/managing project delivery, including team assignments and technical quality. Experience with and use of industry-recognized computer project management software. Excellent planning, prioritization and organizational skills. Excellent time management skills and the ability to manage multiple projects at once. Excellent proposal development, presentation, and client relationship skills. Experience applying analytical and problem-solving skills to complex problems. Demonstrated ability to take initiative, use sound judgment and provide solutions to ensure results. Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing. Excellent collaboration skills and ability to effectively interact with people at all levels, internal and external to the organization. Ability to effectively interact, and communicate with a variety of project staff. Excellent interpersonal skills with a customer-focus approach. Ability to work independently and as part of a diverse team.
Additional Desired Qualifications: A valid professional license obtained by written examination to practice Architecture/Engineering in the State of California. Experience with project management for the design and construction of research buildings for industry, government or university use. MS Project, Maximo, and/or other project management system experience. PMI certified.
