As an Organized Research Unit of UC San Diego, the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) is considered a leader in data-intensive computing and cyberinfrastructure, providing resources, services, and expertise to the national research community, including industry and academia. Cyberinfrastructure refers to an accessible, integrated network of computer-based resources and expertise, focused on accelerating scientific inquiry and discovery.
SDSC supports hundreds of multidisciplinary programs spanning a wide variety of domains, from earth sciences and biology to astrophysics, bioinformatics, and health IT. SDSC launched Comet, a petascale supercomputer that joins the Center's data-intensive Gordon cluster. SDSC is a partner in XSEDE (eXtreme Science and Engineering Discovery Environment), the most advanced collection of integrated digital resources and services in the world.
The S3 Division within SDSC will engage in 3 primary activities: i) examining SDSC software creation projects for business models for continued sustainability, ii) operating the HUBzero infrastructure which involves the creation and ongoing operation and development of the HUBzero software platform, and iii) leading the Science Gateways Community Institute which involves coordinating the efforts of 45 personnel around the United States as members of a distributed virtual organization funded by NSF that provide consulting services to the science gateway community.
The Technical Development Manager will receive technical management assignments in the form of objectives and manage the daily technical activities of a software group delivering a science gateway platform to international audiences, including planning for future upgrades and development of the software platform.
Review and approve recommendations for functional programs and provide guidance to subordinates to achieve goals in accordance with established policies. Participate in customer discovery activities to inform future product directions. Establish and oversee development processes for the group, manage open source releases of the platform and produce bids and technical plans for customer requested system customizations.
Participate in proposal writing activities with Principal investigators and Lead Researchers who wish to engage the group in their work and hold accountability for delivery of defined projects on time and within budget. Determine how to use resources to meet schedules and goals and oversee the high availability operations of platform instances for platform clients. This individual will also coordinate the technical activities associated platform based Science Gateway Community Institute consulting
Bachelor's Degree in related area; and/or equivalent experience/training. Typically two to five (2 - 5) years of experience managing an information technology organization. Professional certification preferred.
Strong demonstrated facilitation skills between IT infrastructure providers, software developers, cybersecurity experts, and external clients.
Proven experience analyzing buy vs. build procurement for products for effective and efficient technology use.
Thorough knowledge of technical concepts and basic operating principles of data communications, computer hardware, vendor IT products, and software. Technologies include PHP, MySQL, Python and an understanding of cluster computing, network administration.
Strong understanding of how programs relate to other business strategies and initiatives. Strong knowledge and understanding of service delivery principles.
Demonstrated knowledge of how HUBzero and the Science Gateways Community Institute are related.
Strong understanding of business concepts such as software sustainability and how development practices may impact the long term cost of maintaining and operating software from a sustainability standpoint.
