Takes leadership role in independently managing and developing a large, complex academic or research partnership of high visibility. Develops vision and establishes agenda to achieve research objectives. Oversees all elements of partnership administration. Collaborates across multiple research groups. Provides leadership in identifying outreach services. With faculty formulates program strategies and goals, directs long-term planning, and develops policies and procedures. Defines and implements publications program in support of the overall program. Is considered a subject matter expert of the organization and is recognized as an expert externally in the field.
Reporting to the Dean of the Jacobs School of Engineering, and serving as a member of his/her senior management team, the Assistant Dean for Partnerships and Initiatives provides high level professional support to the Dean on strategic initiatives for the Jacobs School, and oversees professional staff teams for corporate relations, communications, and entrepreneurism. The position adds to the informed perspective of the Dean and facilitates the implementation of partnership and initiative activities within the Dean's Office and between the Dean's Office and the school's academic units. In the absence of the Dean, s/he is authorized to act on his behalf in partnership and initiative related matters which may be delegated to a staff member.
The position provides leadership and oversight for the partnerships and initiative staff, including hiring and directing staff, and allocating and monitoring budget resources. The position directs and manages the assignment of action items to partnerships and initiative staff and is responsible for helping manage the programmatic priorities of the Dean. The position works with the Dean to articulate his/her vision and helps to communicate that vision with the Jacobs School's advancement team in order to seek collaboration and financial support from external partners.
The Assistant Dean for Partnerships and Initiatives advises and provides analytical support and leadership on a variety of projects of importance to the school and campus. The position maintains confidentiality of privileged information, and performs a wide range of duties that require tact, sensitivity, independent judgment, diplomacy, discretion, and flexibility.
Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field and a minimum of ten (10) years experience in progressively responsible External Relations positions, preferably with at least three (3) years at one engineering school/college of a comprehensive research university; or equivalent combination of education and experience, preferably in a university environment.
Comprehensive understanding of the structure and needs of an engineering educational and research institution as an enterprise, with a keen understanding of the integration of individual and corporate relationships for the purpose of securing financial and other resources to meet those needs for continued growth and success.
Demonstrated academic background and recognized expertise in selected area of research.
Proven expertise with program building within a leading academic institution for handling administrative, budgetary, human resources and financial principles and practices.
Progressive experience in project management roles leading to opportunities to lead and manage individuals working in different program and/disciplinary roles.
Strong leadership and strategic planning including budget planning. Leadership experience in academic and/or government agencies.
Expert oral and written communication skills. Proven written and oral communication skills that demonstrate correct grammar usage, syntax, and format, with the ability to make oral presentations and/or interpret various related programs to constituents.
Demonstrated expertise building collaborations between academia, industrial and/or governmental agencies.
Demonstrated experience in hiring, training, supervising, evaluating, and disciplining staff.Ability to work with dynamic and diverse group of faculty, staff and students.
