Essential Functions: The Wayne State University (WSU) Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) invites applications for a full time Postdoctoral Research Associate position. Screening of application will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled. The anticipated start date is August 1st, 2020. Essential Functions:The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting research in environmental engineering; more specifically in the areas of microplastic pollution, water quality and water treatment. The postdoctoral researcher will investigate the fate and transport of microplastics throughout water and wastewater treatment processes with four specific tasks:1)Detail the occurrence (microplastic quantity and type) and partitioning (between water and sludge) of microplastics for each water and wastewater treatment process by on-site sampling in one water treatment plant and one wastewater treatment plant.2)Uncover the mechanisms controlling the removal of microplastics in each water and wastewater treatment process by using the on-site measurements, bench-scale experiments, and possibly numerical models.3)Validate the operation of the pilot plan in the water treatment plant in collaboration with plant technicians.4)Optimize the removal efficiency of microplastics in the pilot plant by adjusting treatment parameters.Analyze and summarize research data and results and generate research reports and jounal manuscripts.Assist in project management, laboratory management, and student mentoring.
Qualifications: Doctoral degree in environmental engineering, chemical engineering, or related engineering areas. Experience in field water sampling, quantification and identification of microplastics, water quality analysis, water and wastewater treatment, experimental design and implementation, data analysis, etc. Skilled in analytical instruments such as microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, FTIR, scanning electron microscopy.Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including experience in project management, student mentoring, and preparation of documents, reports and publications.
