The only public graduate journalism school in the northeastern U.S., it prepares students from diverse economic, racial, and cultural backgrounds to produce high-quality journalism. As the profession continues to reinvent itself for the digital age, the Newmark J-School is at the forefront of equipping the next generation of journalists with the reporting, writing, interactive, technological, and entrepreneurial skills they need to find stories and tell them effectively. The school currently offers a Master of Arts in Journalism, a unique bilingual M.A. in Journalism for students fluent in English and Spanish, and the nation's first M.A. in Social Journalism. Reporting to the Executive Director of Development, the Research and Development Associate works on identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding major gift donors to support scholarships and programs of the Newmark J-School. The Research and Development Associate also serves as the development office liaison with key departments, including external relations, finance, admissions, student affairs, alumni relations, public safety, and facilities. Duties include but are not limited to: - Assists with preparation for meetings with major gift donors and institutional funders;
- Prepares in-depth research profiles and prospect identification materials;
- Manages the institutional funders portfolio, including tracking and meeting all deadlines as well as partnering across the school to provide compelling pitches for support and accurate reports;
- Works closely with administrative and academic leadership to draft proposals for funding to individual donors and institutional funders;
- Coordinates Foundation Board meetings and conducting all pre- and post-communication, including drafting meeting minutes;
- Assists in executing a strategy for new events focused on revenue generation;
- Processes all contributions in the school's database, Raiser's Edge;
- Writes all solicitation letters, acknowledgement letters, and other collateral materials in a timely manner;
- Serves as the point person at the school for development policies on gifts;
- Works closely with the finance department to ensure that fundraising numbers are reconciled and prepare financial reports using the school's database, Raiser's Edge; and
- Works closely with the finance department and admissions on the scholarship allocation process.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS Bachelor's Degree and six years' related experience required. A preferred candidate should have: - Experience assisting in the development of cultivation, solicitation and stewardship strategies for major gift donors.
- Experience working with institutional funders and drafting grant submissions.
- Experience with Raiser's Edge or Salesforce, iWave, FoundationSearch; advanced Microsoft Office skills.
- Excellent research, writing, planning, organizational, and financial skills; strong follow-through; high-level analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects as priorities change, with an exceptional eye for detail and accuracy and focus on meeting all deadlines and performance goals.
- Knowledge of and enthusiasm for journalism education.
- Ability to work evenings and weekends.
