Columbia University in the City of New York is seeking nominations and applications for an Associate University Librarian (AUL) for Research and Learning to provide leadership for one of the world’s leading library systems. Fundamental to our vision is the proactive role that Columbia’s libraries have in advancing the research and teaching mission of the University and in expanding our intellectual partnerships with faculty and students.
The AUL for Research and Learning will provide leadership and deep expertise in facilitating and supporting the products and processes of scholarship, embracing an expansive agenda for the Libraries as vital collaborators in Columbia’s research and learning ecosystem. In partnership with research administration, academic computing, institutes, and deans, this position provides strategic leadership in support of University and Libraries initiatives and is responsible for driving coordinated efforts that advance knowledge at the highest level, support research and teaching, and disseminate Columbia-produced knowledge to the world. The AUL for Research and Learning leads an excellent, diverse team in designing, delivering, and assessing services that enhance disciplinary research and enable interdisciplinary connections among researchers at Columbia and globally. By fostering the development of programs and spaces that integrate expertise, functional knowledge, information technology, and innovative design, the position supports student success within the curriculum and experimentation beyond the classroom. This position oversees operations for the following divisions with a total of approximately 130 FTE: Access Services; Copyright Advisory Services; Digital Scholarship; Humanities and Global Studies, including responsibility for the Burke Library at Union Theological Seminary; and Science, Engineering and Social Science. The Libraries’ Communications department, in service to the overall organization, also reports directly to this AUL.
Reporting to the Vice Provost and University Librarian, the AUL is a member of the Libraries’ Executive Committee and works in close collaboration with the AUL for Collections, the Associate Vice President for Technology and Preservation, and the Associate Vice President for Finance and Administration as a key participant in overall Libraries budgetary, assessment, development, and strategic planning. The AUL works closely with the Libraries’ Leadership Council, the Provost’s Advisory Committee on the Libraries, and the Student Library Advisory Committee to set priorities for the organization.
