The Calhoun School, a leading progressive, independent, coeducational day school in Manhattan, seeks a full time Assistant Director of Admissions, Lower School - Early Childhood (LS-EC). The Assistant Director of Admissions will oversee all aspects of the Preschool-2nd Grade admissions process, represent Calhoun’s mission and program to the public, and manage the school’s relationship with prospective families.
The Assistant Director will report to the Director of Admissions and be a vital partner in Calhoun’s recruitment and admissions work as we communicate our stories to the public and enroll mission-appropriate families.
Represent Calhoun’s mission, program, culture and admission process to prospective families and the broader community
Lead and manage an admission process that allows applicant families to understand the benefits of a Calhoun education
Coordinate inclusive and responsive communication with applicant families so that the process is honest, caring, and supports the student and their family.
Communicate Calhoun’s commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion work to prospective families.
Lead and manage school tours, Open Houses, recruitment events and yield events
Manage process of interviewing applicants and parents
Manage the selection process of new students with admissions committees in a way that values equity and inclusion
Work closely with applicants and newly-enrolled families to help them feel secure, connected and informed until the school year begins
Manage applicant files and admissions data, and ensure that databases are fully functioning admissions tools
Coordinate parent admissions volunteers
Participate in development of recruitment materials and digital content that accurately and effectively represent Calhoun’s early childhood program
Demonstrate professionalism, discretion and confidentiality in dealings with Calhoun employees, students, families and the broader community
Collaborate with LS-EC Division Director and faculty as stakeholders in admissions work
Serve as a member of the LS-EC leadership team
Serve as a collaborative member of school-wide admission team
Support positive relationships with educational constituencies, including preschools, peer schools, consultants and access organizations.
Work closely with Director of Admission to implement a recruitment strategy, enroll mission-appropriate families and meet Calhoun’s enrollment goals
Participate in the life of Calhoun, attend school events and build relationships with teachers, parents and students.
SPECIAL POSITION REQUIREMENTS
The Assistant Director of Admissions will attend onsite and offsite events throughout the year—during the day, evenings and occasionally, on weekends-- to successfully promote the school and its mission.

Strong communication skills, demonstrated in public presentations, writing, personal conversations and listening abilities
Ability to engage effectively and build relationships with young children and their families
Ability to communicate thoughtfully about early childhood education and progressive education
Ability to connect in culturally responsive ways with constituents with varied backgrounds and identities
Ability to organize, prioritize and manage multiple tasks simultaneously with attention to detail and deadlines
Ability to think strategically and creatively
Ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues
Four or more years as a communicator in an education setting
Experience speaking publicly to families and educators in small and large groups
Experience with institutional equity and inclusion work
Experience as a contributing member of a fast-paced, collaborative environment
Proficiency in languages other than English
Experience in admissions or placement work
