The Soga Lab at University of California, Berkeley (UCB) is accepting applications for a post-doctoral researcher in the area of distributed fiber optic sensing (DFOS).
Appointment length: This is a twelve month, 100% time appointment with the possibility of extension being subject to performance and budgetary approval. Anticipated start: June 2020 or until the position is filled.
Responsibilities: This position focuses on the development of advanced distributed fiber optic sensing systems and the associated algorithm to process the data. This individual will use their strong skills in fiber-based optical system design, opto-electronics, opto-mechanics, quantitative analysis, and software to develop and characterize fiber optic sensing systems, calibration fixtures and manufacturing tools. The specific tasks include (i) development of advanced architecture of a DFOS optical system, (ii) optimization of the current system such as embedded system control of the optical/electrical components and (iii) design and integration of RF electronics. Working closely with researchers on other DFOS projects at UCB, the researcher is expected to publish peer-reviewed articles and to present findings at national and international conferences.
Basic Qualifications (at the time of application):
PhD (or equivalent international degree), or enrolled in a PhD (or equivalent international degree) granting program at the time of application.
Advanced Qualifications (by start date):
PhD or equivalent international degree by start date.
The candidate should have no more than four years of post-degree research experience.
PhD in optical engineering, optical physics, electrical engineering or related/relevant field.
Relevant experience as a sensor design researcher and/or hardware developer.
Deep understanding of fiber optics and nonlinear optics.
Thorough understanding of sensor physics and design, measurement principles, and instrumentation.
Expertise in BOTDR/BOTDA/OFDR/OTDR, Fiber Bragg Gratings, Fabry-Perot interference effects, light propagation in SM/MM fibers, and polarization effects.
Data analysis, signal processing, and programming (e.g., MATLAB, Python, C, LabView).
Fluent in control and data platform software development.
Previous experience with fiber optic sensors and applications.
Good understanding of non-invasive sensors used to measure strain/temperature/acoustic information.
Experience with troubleshooting and debugging prototype hardware/software.
Electronic design (analog and digital), PCB design, and fabrication.
Salary: To be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
