The Director of Web Strategy oversees the design, development and overall user experience of the university's website (ohio.edu), affiliated sites and embedded web technologies. They will lead a team of designers and front-end developers in University Communications and Marketing and drive strategy and project prioritization for back-end developers in the Office of Information Technology (OIT). They will also work collaboratively with the Director of Digital Content and Web Content Manager, the Senior Director of Communications, and the Senior Director of Media Planning in UCM to ensure the university website meets institutional goals for communications and marketing as well as supporting student recruitment. To be successful in this role, the Director must be effective at translating customer needs into technical solutions, planning and coordinating resources to complete projects within time and budget constraints, communicating technical information to a broad range of audiences to drive adoption, and providing both technical and creative leadership within their domain.
Clearly Define, Communicate and Achieve Overarching Web Strategy – The Director will be charged with working with constituents across campus to more clearly define strategic measurable goals and governance for the university website and its ongoing management.
Lead Design and Development Team – Based on defined goals, they will prioritize projects and manage the resources of the team toward achieving website goals while also meeting short term and long term web needs on campus. This will include managing expectations of both clients and colleagues and inspiring increased productivity from team members.
Improve CMS interface and training – The Director will lead a project to significantly improve the back-end user interface of the university's Drupal CMS, making it possible for web editors across campus to more easily implement best practices while streamlining resource use. In addition, they will work with the team to introduce and manage a more robust web editor training program.
Drive toward industry-leading web practices. Maintain knowledge of best practices and innovative strategies in web design and development, and ensure Ohio University's web presence consistently leads in the space.
Ensure Security, Accessibility and Data Privacy Compliance – Partner with team members in OIT to strengthen the security and accessibility of the site and to ensure ongoing compliance in both areas as well as data privacy compliance
Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution in computer science, graphic design, or related field
Minimum of 5 years experience working in web design and development
Minimum of 3 years experience working on large-scale enterprise-wide sites in a university setting or similarly complex, multi-layered organization
Minimum of 1 year experience effectively managing a team of designers and/or developers
Experience managing one or more major website rebuilds or rebranding efforts for a large-scale site
Experience applying brand direction in the web environment, including creating brand-appropriate web templates and creating guidelines for web editors
Demonstrated experience creating and communicating effective information architecture plans
Experience with UI design and prototyping using Adobe CC
Demonstrated expertise in responsive design and commitment to ensuring best possible user experience on all platforms
Experience designing and developing in Drupal and Wordpress
Strong understanding of server and network technologies, user interfaces, web applications, and backend development
Ability to create and deliver vision for best-in-class CMS interface that supports editors with a wide variety of skill levels
Demonstrated strategic approach to project management approach focused on delivering creative solutions and maintaining positive relationships with internal clients and external vendors.
Aggressive problem diagnosis and creative problem solving skills
Strong organizational skills to juggle multiple tasks with varied timelines and tolerance for disruption and redirection as priorities shift
Ability to work and thrive in a fast-paced environment, learn rapidly and master diverse web technologies and techniques
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Experience leading a web team in a university setting
